New MALE nurse asking for fashion advice! Help please...?

Published

Hi! It is not often that a male nurse would ask for fashion advice, but I hope you'll help me on this.

I am a new nurse, applying for a job at a hospital for a Staff Nurse or Clinical Nurse position.

Can you please give me some tips or advice as to what to wear for a job interview?

Thank You for Your time in reading and responding.

I wore business casual, no tie. Dress shirt, slacks, belt, shoes.

The hospital I'm interviewing at recommended business clothes - basically suits and ties for men, skirt suits or pantsuits for women. Apparently they're really picky about how applicants dress for interviews there, so I plan on pretty much going all out :uhoh3:

it's hard to overdress (unless u wear a tux)....I'd recommend a suit, either dark gray or navy, with a tie n nice shoes, belt, etc.....look neat and put together and you can't go wrong

The general rule for any job interview is one step above what is generally worn in the workplace. Business casual is fine, or a dress shirt and tie if you like. We see a lot of scrubs as well, as people often come before or after work to interview. Since you aren't working as a nurse I'd skip the scrubs.

Anyone who comes into an interview in my facility wearing less than a suit and tie might as well tear up their application.

Suit, shirt and tie.

LOL, ...and not to mention clean underwear. :jester:

Seriously, it isn't so much that they want to see if you have fashion sense, but rather your willingness to conform to professional expectations. Health care is a business. Until you appear at the bedside (where clinical needs dictate another sort of dress code), you're expected to dress like you're ready for work in the business setting; ie your suit and tie is your uniform. Not to mention brushed teeth, clean fingernails, trimmed hair, no metal studded piercings on your face, etc.

suite and tie brother. dress for success. good luck.

I suppose I agree with the general consensus here. I think a suit & tie is a good idea for an interview. Also pay attention to the details. Make sure your belt/shoes match and aren't shabby looking. Don't wear a lot of jewelry, go easy on the cologne (if at all), fresh haircut, etc.

It's not as much about what you wear, as it is what you have to say, but you have to market yourself. As a new nurse, you want to put your best foot forward so that they consider you over someone with more experience.

Where I work, business casual is widely accepted. I think you can't go wrong with a suit but if you don't have one and can't afford one, I think you'd be OK in dress pants, dress shirt, and tie. If you are anything like my husband, it's worth it to mention that you HAVE to iron or dry clean your outfit! :lol2:

Do you know anyone who works at this hospital that could give you any info on what is acceptable?
