New LPN, interested in/worried abour EXCELSIOR

Published

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do an internet based nursing program, and Excelsior seems good except that it is not accepted in CA, and 1 other state.

Is it possible to take the NCLEX in one state, get licensed, then transfer your license to any state? such as CA?

Thank you!

Don't try to get around your state's requirements. It's a lousy plan.

I am currently enrolled in Excelsior and am just waiting to take the clinicals exam - CPNE. But I live in NYC, where there is clear an unhindered acceptance of the program.

What state are you in? If you are in Cali I would strongly suggest doing the Indiana State Uni on-line BSN.

I am NOT in cali, but I have a lot of family in CA and would consider moving in the future. ISU seems like a wonderful alternative except that there tuition seems higher then EC.

California will absolutely not accept an Excelsior education, period. The only exception is is you were enrolled in the program prior to October 2003.

You can graduate from Excelsior's nursing program and obtain initial RN licensure in another state, but California will not allow you to endorse this license into their state because Excelsior does not satisfy CA's clinical hour requirements.

I am new to this site and to the EC. I am preparing to take NC 1 and I want to know since you don't have to take NC 2 now, will you need to know some of that info for NC 1 exam.

Specializes in Cardiac, Med-Surg, ICU.

Also, as a new LPN, Excelsior MAY not work out as well as you think. It sounds great, in theory, to do distance learning. However, as a new nurse you don't have the benefit of experience and clinical knowledge that comes from working in the field for years. That is not to say you couldn't do it, but it's just something to think about.

Specializes in ICU, PICC Nurse, Nursing Supervisor.

another thing to note is that ec is not a internet program. it is a self paced program based on the fact that you study then test out of the theory test. then do a 3.5 day clinical evaluation. you will not be able to practice as a rn in cali if you go to ec.
