New Job or No New Job, help! TBHC

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hey everyone-

I'm new to ALLNURSES and I'm looking for some advice from anyone who is familiar with this facility or can help me out in general.

I'm supposed to be starting a nursing job in critical care at The Brooklyn Hospital center. Orientation is Monday July 1st. My problem is that it's Wednesday and I've got no information on uniforms, time and location of orientation, what I should bring etc. Every time I've contacted Nurse Recruitment about this it's been hard to get a straight answer or they've been busy with job fairs and I've been told over and over again "We will get back to you this afternoon" and they haven't.

The problem is my start date has been pushed back a month from June due to "internal issues" and now that I think I'm finally going to start this July I'm afraid they will do this again. I've had to put in all the work initiating conversation which is awful cause I feel like a nuisance. The last time I contacted them was yesterday with no real answers.

My question is should I go over the department's head and ask nursing education about what I should bring, what time is orientation and what I should need to wear? Does anyone out there in the community know? Should I just show up Monday? Nurse Recruitment hasn't told me otherwise about my start date but of course I'm getting nervous when I'm not really getting the answers I need back to my calls and emails.

ps I'm really excited to be starting here too! It would be awful if it didn't work out.

Appreciated,

Heather

I would definitely keep trying. If no call this afternoon call HR or education and ask. You have to be told the when where's and wears lol. Also, ask what to bring (do u need ID, license info, diploma, references? ) I don't blame you for being nervous lol this would make me crazy lol! Keep calling until you get the answers you need! If you have to go back to the job fair and ask! Let us know on how it goes and congrats on the new job!

I'd only inquire about time and where to report.

As as far as dress, I'd go in scrubs.

This is all you'll need on your first day. Anything else can be dealt with later. (Of course, bring ID and your basic credentials, pen, notebook, etc.)

P.S. Pack a lunch just in case. Good luck!

well as it turns out I didn't get the job and I don't know what to do.

The unit manager of the ICU was fired - she was firing people on her floor (union members) who I guess were pretty mad they lost their jobs. They reported her and in turn she was fired and they had to give all those people their jobs back. I was applying for a position that didn't technically exist any more.

The problem is, I had to call nurse recruitment to FIND THIS OUT just YESTERDAY. I can't believe that this JUST happened - they had to have known these issues were going on internally yet I quit my job and signed a year lease on an apt. and now I'm stuck.

I'm just wondering if any of this is legal? I have an acceptance email, a start day, my salary and everything.

They said the best they could do for me was give me a position on a Vent floor - but I did not leave my old ICU job for a position on a vent floor. I'm not used to that kind of care and patient load. I also am not interested in losing my skills.

I'm at a loss of what to do next or how to get a job in NY with an associate's degree and a little over a year experience. I want ICU. Any ideas anyone? This is devastating to me.

I would suck it up and take the vent floor job while you look for something else.

This was going to be my exact advice. If the market is really as tough in NY as allnurses would lead me to believe, I don't think you have much choice.

I'm definitely NOT a legal expert, but I have personal knowledge of two (separate) instances in which nurses had only received a verbal notifications - that were later rescinded. But in both cases, the hospitals ended up offering a financial settlement to the nurses in question.

You'll undoubtedly have to play hard ball - with legal representation - to negotiate with them. If you made changes (incurring expenses) as a result of their job offer, you could ask for reimbursement for those costs. It's definitely worth a shot, particularly if you can find an attorney who will work for contingency fee.

I'm sorry as well! It's not fair at all and you have every right to be mad. I don't think you'd get far if you hired an attorney since they did offer you another position and most hospitals have a statement in their contracts that basically say they have the right to move you around to different positions to fill spots anyway. I would just take the vent floor until I could find something else or transfer to a different floor. Maybe your old hospital would take you back if they haven't filled the position yet. It's a shame they didn't let you know sooner!

Thanks for the solid information.

I'm not going to take any legal action though. It was just a thought of mine since I was so confused as to how this all happened. Even though hospitals have a right to move you around - hospitals around here pay higher for specialties and since the vent floor isn't an ICU I'd be getting salaried at a lower rate which wasn't my initial offer. Stinks.

But I'm not going to do it, if any thing I'd be better off trying to get my old job back. It would be a shame to be stuck on a floor for a year where I wouldn't be happy. If you don't like your work it impacts your care.

Anyway, it is hard to find jobs in NY, insanely hard, but thanks everyone I think I have my answer now.
