St Barnabas Livingston New Grads

Can anyone please share with me what they are paying new grads? Someone told me its like $53,000 which I completely cannot believe. The hospital is approx 20 miles from NYC and in NYC the new grads are making $68,000 & up (easily). 53K just seemed ridiculously low and I imagine would send lots of new RNs scrambling to the city.

Just curious - thanks.

Most hospitals in NYC are unionized, hence the higher pay, plus it's Manhattan.

I could easily see NJ hospitals paying 53k. I work in NYC, and currently pay almost $600/mo in gas, tolls and taxes. Most NJ hospitals I interviewed at paid around $27-32/hr base.

yea that seems about right i interviewed for there and thats how much they were paying

Wow! thanks for the responses. That is so surprising.

Steven - did you choose NYC b/c of the salaries or for other reasons? did you encounter any NYC hospitals that have transit chek or any other incentives for travel? Additionally, you are in the NICU, right? What do you think the chances are for a new grad to end up in the NICU?

I like NYC simply because some of the top hopsitals are there. The extra $$$ doesnt hurt either.

Many thanks!

I chose NYC because they (NYP) offered >$12k worth of tuition reimbursement, and were very competitive in terms of salary. The NICU I work in is a major referral center. We get kids from ALL OVER the area. We've even taken some pts CHOP turned down. My manager hires new grads all the time. I think he hired around 12-15 last year alone. NYP offers transit chek, up to $115/mo pretax.

I know starting rate is approximately >$30.00 per/hr at SBMC, Livingston, NJ.

While the NYC salary sound great, there are multiple things to be considered. First commuting time-there is nothing quite like working a 12-13 hours shift and then adding 2 hours commuting time daily. If you drive, tolls, gas and parking(you pay for) are extras. There is NY city taxes, county and state taxes in addition to our NJ taxes.

I was offered a nice position at Sloan Kettering for $68k as a new grad-after I deducted all of the above-I made less than I do at St B's! Anyway if you need that extra 10k just work th 6-8 hours extra per week that you would've spent commuting!

I just accepted a full time nights position at St. Barns on their Surgical Telemetry floor. Do you enjoy working there? I've heard great things about it!

Liz,

How are you liking it? Unfortunately for a few personal reasons, I was unable to make the move from Boston to NJ.
