if the new IR laws are passed do you think that we will be able to recrute more ppl into the nursing profession?

If though, you actually had the chance to tell this guy what it is like to just be an "average Aussie" and a nurse - what would you say??

id like him to come to work with me for a month......i work full time night duty and i work every weekend so id like to see how he goes and how this effects his life and well being (especially in summer here were its been so many days in the mid 40degC and just see how he sleeps) ...........that would be the polite me but the annoyed me would want to ***** slap his orifice and get all medievil

I would like to introduce this gentleman to the philosophical concept of "the original position" created by John Rawls. Broadly speaking, it says that you should create any system or public policy behind a veil of ignorance,

as though you didn't know where or who in society you would be. In other words, design policy that you would be happy with, not as a rarified academic with an obviously privileged background, but as anyone - small business owner, tycoon, Indigenous youth, elderly woman...

Economic inequalities are only permitted insofar as they benefit the least well off members of society.

For example, if one were to consider whether or not slavery based on race should be allowed, the original position makes it clear that it should not. No rational person, not knowing whether or not they would be the race that is in slavery or the race that is in slave mastery, would choose to allow that system. Nobody wants to risk being a slave. It would be more sensible to choose a society where equality is a guiding principle, because then whichever race one was would not matter. The power of the original position in providing a lens through which to view moral issues has convinced many that Rawls' ideas, if not his conclusions, are to be held in high esteem.

This approach combines justice and fairness in a way that the IR laws don't.

Hi Grace, that's what we need! Retirees to take up the baton...to remind us of the hard yards in earlier years! Remember working 10 days straight whilst expected to attend midwifery lectures? I've been in nursing for 24yrs solid.They won't sack us...I've asked for a redundancy. The Nursing supervisor wants one too! With this IR change we might get paid out...and we'll start our own hospital lol! Seriously, we don't need the new IR laws.The public hospital system has set some great options for us...ie. more flexible with rostering, addressing horizontal violence and bullying in the workplace. I know that these IR laws will not help recruit quality nurses. Us oder ones will have to keep working. Cheers

I'm seriously considering coming out of retirement and taking up the baton, once again! Done it in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. Be buggared if I'll sit back and watch all we fought for be lost for the next generation!!!!! NO WAY!!

Better still, I'll stay retired, but do it all voluntarily. They can't sack me that way!!!!

Or, maybe I'll just join the Australian Wheat Board!!! :rotfl:

I have just downloaded it from the workplace.gov.au website, and apparently it is supposed to have all the changes and stuff in it. I'm concerned becuase I am just starting my BN.

Sorry Michelle but don't feel too secure. There has been a consolidated push for YEARS to get rid of penalty rates. The police did it here in QLD - traded penalties for higher wage - trouble is that as the years went on the wage was eroded by inflation and they still have no penalties.

IR= Industrial Relations

They have been passed already by the Federal goverment (which is a Liberal goverment but that means that it is a right wing political party because, being upside down to the rest of the world our political names are reversed;) ) but the implementation of the laws is being held up by challenges by the various State goverments which are labour goverments (meaning they are left wing,or at least, sort of:p). Have I confused you enough yet??

It's also being challenged in the High Court and they have agreed to hear it, but that won't be until May I think...

I see. Geez, I had no idea that liberal meant right wing. haha. Well, at least nothing has been finalized yet.
