Hi there,
I just recently graduated with a BScN in a nursing program in Canada and planning to write my NCLEX-RN in June of 2019. I'm interested in working in the states (maybe NY, Boston, or Chicago?).
I was wondering if there are any nurses out there who were in the same boat as me (a new grad nurse from Canada looking for career opportunities in the states) who could give me some advice/insight on how I should go about tackling this dream of mine.
I'm open to travel nursing agencies but I'm not quite too sure if they are open to hiring new graduate nurses.
I've seen couple of posts on here with Canadian new grad nurses getting job offers in the states with minimum job experiences and I was wondering what they did to get the job offers? Or is this a rare occurrence and is it actually quite difficult to get this kind of opportunity?
I've also heard of new grad nurse residency programs offered by hospitals in the states - but how open are they in offering this kind of opportunity to Canadian nurses?
I would appreciate honestly any sort of advice, big or small!!
Thanks ?

Hi. I'm a new grad. I applied to Maine State. I chose General Surgery department. There was this career fair I attended in Toronto. I got in touched with the recruiter, got telephone interview & accepted the job offer. Now, I'm just basically waiting for my Visa Screen (Credential Assessment) & Maine license. Otherwise, you can just search online either hospital or staffing agency for job vacancies in the State.

What was the recruitment process with the Marskell group? Are you a canadian citizen? Do you know what the process is like for Canadian permanent residents? Where there lots of US agencies at the toronto fair? How much experience did you have, i know you said you were a new grad but were you working part time ?

- Hey. Yes, I am Canadian citizen. I have Registered Practical Nurse experience and I believe even though I am a new grad RN, my prospective employer took that into consideration. It really depends on the employer & unit you applied to. Being a Canadian citizen and BSN is the factor to get TN visa.
- I am reading online that having a Canadian PR does not allow you to work in the US. The US will still factor your country of citizenship if they will release a work permit or not. Also, leaving Canada might jeopardize your Permanent Residency and affect your future citizenship application. There are people saying to get the Canadian citizenship first before appylying to the US.
- Marskell Group has upcoming Career Fair again. You basically just need to register online for free to attend. You can just go & just see what the companies offer. There are Law Group as well if you have questions regarding visa/immigration.

Thanks for your detailed response! I will be attending that fair, I am extremely appreciative that you mentioned it. Ther is definitely several things I hav to consider7. Unfortunately my birth country does not allow for dual citizenship.
Are you on a TN visa? What were the locations they had available besides the one you mentioned? Did you have much flexibility? It's tough because I have to coordinate with my spouse. Also, what is breach of contract fee in your agreement with the agency?

Unless you are a Mexican or Canadian citizen TN is not an option for you. You will have to arrange with any agency or employer to go through immigrant visa or work visa
