New Grads and Temp Agencies

Any new grads having any luck with temp agencies???

I don't understand why a temp agency would hire a new grad. We only learn so much in the school atmosphere. When an agency (or travel nurse, for that matter) is placed on a floor at a hospital, they aren't going to be trained or anything. They're expected to be able to function at an experienced level from the start.

How exactly would you get a year experience of hospital floor nurse work as a new grad before allowing your agency to place you on a hospital floor?

Ok, just to get this straight....I would NEVER allow that to happen to me. Just because I am a new grad doesn't mean I am stupid. I would never go onto a floor until I get experience of at least a year on my own. I hope no new grad is not that nieve. The agency I just got hired at puts me in flu shot clinics and sitter positions. Somewhat good experience, gives me networking possibilities and the pay is really good.

Thanks for trying to scare me out of stupidity, but it is not needed!!!!! :specs:

That type of agency is different than the type of work we've been talking about so don't be offended. Also, a couple of posters on here have made it sound like even as a new grad, they could handle it. Those of us with experience are just trying to help anyone who hasn't been around to avoid mistakes by taking on more than they can handle, resulting in loss of license and/or lawsuit. We are trying to help, not make anyone feel stupid.

................yes!

Hi i'm a new grad and I got a call from a temp agency. They were planning on offering me a part time school nurse position.

The odd thing was, i swear school nurses need their Masters in Nursing, as well as some kind of certificate. But somehow this school does not require the school nurse to have that type of license, but only RN is sufficient. The agency i've been dealing with is not being upfront with me about the job situation. here i started a thread telling my story.

Thanks everyone for posting. I have been getting a lot of calls from temp agencies. They get my resume off of a major job site. They are very aggressive like telemarketers. I know their bottom line is money not careing for me, so I take what they tell me with a grain of salt. I see nothing wrong with working for them for flu clinics, bedside sitters and small clinics, but anything other then that worries me because I know there will be no training. The last thing I need is to be placed in the ICU (which I wouldn't take of course). I moved 2,000 miles and finding a job has been a nightmare. I will take anything at this point as long as I am safe for my patients. I am even considering giving up and getting a non-RN job until I can find a RN job. So sad.

Its not sad. You have to do what you have to do. There are no guarantees in life.

New grade can do certain skills we are not that bad! so we will not put our PT in risk if the agency will match us with what will fit our skills such as G-tube PT. Please If you have ajob and the economy never affected you or your spouce don't say " Oh , I know how is the economy, cause you don't". New grade are looked at as something bad to the healthcare know. Do you know how long it takes to get a new job now. What do you wants us to do? I was thinking about going back to work as a C.N.A just to pay my bills or at least my student loan. If you have some thing nice to say it your are more than welcome if not please keep it to your self. THIs web site is my escape now don't ruin it for me or others. yesterday I went to look for ajob from 11-4 pm filling applications and taking tests. I was so tierd when I came home. this morning I started again after I dropped my daughter to school. I am afraid I can't do this any longer cause I have no money for gas !!! At the store I had to choose between buying "pull ups " to my 2 years or Milk and. Then bread!!!! GIVE US A BREAK PLEASE.

I dont think we are saying new grads practicing unsafe nursing if you do temp agency. It unsafe for you all. We all worked hard for our licenses. I know I did. Now why should anyone give them up so easily. Protect licenses. If you a wake up call go on you state board of nursing and look at the cases that are open. The agency is going to protect themselcez.

Not all agencies are the same.

A couple of my classmates went through an agency and have found temporary work as a RN at a Psych facility. They were never offered anything else. My classmates said their shifts only involved paperwork. I was going apply at the same agency, but it seems they have too many new grads for that type of work.

Most Psych facilities I know the RN does the paperwork and LPN pass the meds. Some are changing.
