New grads can't get jobs afraid of becoming an old new grad.

So I get my BSN and my RN liscense. I'ts been 5 months and about 50-75 job applications latter. And if this keeps up I'm going to be and OLD new grad with no experience who Is in the hole 30k in student loans. So what do I do now. I can't move locations due to family and financial restriction. Should I just get out of the nursing game and go for a teaching job for right now?

It is a tough market everywhere...we had a job fair, and for about 100 positions thru the house, we had 450 applicants. We were told to tell people we are looking for BSN prepared only. I have sat in on about 40 interviews in my unit for 10 positions.

Well I am a 6 month graduated New Grad that works in a NICU as a HUC. So I get to be Old Grad, that ONLY wants to work with Babies in "Nurse Recruiter/Managers" eyes.. No matter how many times you tell people "I do not have a preference I am ready to get started" "I am excited for any job Tele, Med-Surg, Ortho, Ono".. They do not listen. I have been told by my recruiters to LIE to people... Sorry I have integrity. :) Even though most people don't....

.....

I worked in NICU for four years, from 2002 to 2006 in Argentina. I got my license in CA 5 months ago, and I can not find a job. I get a lot of calls from traveling nursing companies because they get happy when they see my experience, but when they realize that it is from four years ago, they all say: "I'm sorry, but we need someone with recent experience...or at least in the United States" *sight*

I really want to "be" a nurse again, but it is really hard now.

I imagine that if a New grad from here (USA) finds it hard to find a job, how much more difficult it will be for me? A lot more :(

Oh well, like other person said, there are people in worse situations. We just have to keep trying :)

I just graduated last december and it took me about 6 months to find a job, but it's an hour and a half commute every day. Don't give up, they're out there but you just have to keep trying. I knew girls getting hired at facilities left and right that kept telling me they're not taking new grads.

i'm looking for work in riverside and san diego counties of ca.......new grad lvn's have a very hard time getting a job. i graduated with honors, had 0 absences, having "glowing" references from clinicals and.........nothing! here in ca, most of the other industries (teaching, accounting, etc) are doing worse and are hiring less than the medical field. i had to leave a 25 yr career behind because it took such a dump."

i want to work in acute care, but that will not happen for quite a while. even the snf's in these areas are requiring 1 years experience, cuz they know they can! there's a flood of new grads, thanks to the government spouting "nursing shortage, nursing shortage". with the economy as bad as it is here, the experienced lvn's are coming back into the job hunting force d/t either being laid off, hours cut, or spouse got laid off in some other industry.

it's pretty easy to do, for all us california new grads (rn and lvn) email obama (says he takes questions, comments and concerns) at http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact and get him to act on this!

personally, i commented on how they spouted out, everyone went to school and now we can't get a job. he is needing to enact a federal tax credit to all facilities that hire new grad lvns and rn's and retain them for 6 mos.

federal government somewhat created this problem, now they need to help!

just my opinion....... flood the whitehouse with our frustration!

the tax credit is not a bad idea....but...that tax credit going to have to be just about equal to the amount of the cost of training that new individual for a particular department. i'm guessing even if federal government does get involved with some type of incentive it will only be a program that is a band-aid on the problems. because of the general mood of the country that "deficits are bad!" and/or "the national debt out of control!" and with the gop more than likely getting the house and maybe the senate, i don't believe the obama administration can push through anything that looks like an fdr new deal program. so basically for the most part new grads are just going to have to be very patient and have to wait for a shot. time is the only healer to this issue.

i've been saying this for the past year, and even made a long list of all the agencies, people, media, government officials with their direct emails to send their letters to. until we all tell our story, nobody can understand. i've written tons of letters. i hope everybody in our situation writes a letter. only through communication will our voice be heard.

3/18/2010--public law. hiring incentives to restore employment act - title i: incentives for hiring and retaining unemployed workers -

(sec. 101)

amends the internal revenue code to:

(1) exempt for-profit and nonprofit employers, including public institutions of higher education, from social security and railroad retirement taxes in 2010 (except for the first calendar quarter of such year) for new employees who are hired after february 3, 2010, and before january 1, 2011, and who certify that they have not worked more than 40 hours during the last 60 days; and

(2) allow an increase in the general business tax credit for the retention of such employees for at least one year at specified wage levels. prohibits any carryback of unused business tax credit amounts. appropriates to the federal old-age and survivors insurance trust fund and the federal disability insurance trust fund under title ii of the social security act amounts necessary to cover any reduction in revenues resulting from the tax exemptions provided by this act. requires the secretary of the treasury to pay to u.s. possessions, including the commonwealths of puerto rico and the northern mariana islands, an amount equal to the loss to such possessions resulting from this tax exemption. title ii: expensing -

is this the tax credit your talking about? if it is.

1. let look at this. ok at least they are offering something for the jobs in general at this point. but 17.6 billion while it looks good really is a very small drop in the bucket when looking at the whole u.s. economy. again it better than nothing but it just a band aid at this point. also it a generalized unemployment bill so hospitals are just one of millions of business that are fighting for this money. lastly it's not just for new grads it for anyone unemployed for less than 40 hours in 60 days. so overall i don't see how this will significantly will help out most new nursing grads out there.

2. also i have to ask how many new grads out there are completely out of the work force. this bill, if i'm reading this correctly says that if i don't work 40 hours (notice not 40 hours a week) in 60 days i would qualify for this program. unfortunately could never honestly admit to this. i worked all the way through school and i'm still working a part time slep job in retail to keep my daily expenses (rent, food, etc., etc.) in check and to pay my student loans which have come due. so again i have to ask how many new grads qualify for this?

3. from the cnn article:

but some struggling small business owners see the jobs bill as putting the cart before the horse. firms devastated by the recession need help rebuilding before they'll be in a position to create jobs, they say.

volley goodman runs a boutique real estate company, [color=#004276]callvolley.com, in houston. he has owned the company for three years, but business has been nearly dead since the start of 2010. he tried to get a government-backed [color=#004276]america's recovery capital loan to pay down accumulated credit card debt and reinvest that cash in marketing, but was turned down.

"i have to use everything that i make to pay overhead and business expenses, and i cannot do the online advertising i would like to do," goodman said. "you have to think, most people are suffering from declines -- they are not looking to hire new people."

this is more of my view on the situation business have to recover first then hire later. basically as i said before only time is going to health the overall economy.

let me end by saying that i very glad you were able to take advantage of this program and that you were able to find employment. and i glad that something was able to be passed by our government that would help the employment situation. but in my mind h.r. 2847 is not going to help many new nursing grads out there. the bill's requirement that anyone that has worked less than 40 hour in 60 days provision is at the same time too broad and too narrow. anyone completely out of work can apply for this program, while at the same time people that have worked a different type of job (other than their wanted profession) to pay bills don't qualify.

in the end we will see what happens after the november elections. perhaps at the end of the day the gop and the dems can get along enough to actually help the american work force in the shorter term by floating a higher employment rate with a new round of job bills. but i have my doubts. also as i repeated in most of the posts i put up on allnurses this issue is something that has to be worked out over time by our free market economy. it going to take time to clear all the crap out of the system and regain confidence. but it will happen. it's just a matter of when.

op have you thought about becoming a nursing instructor? it seems like there is still a demand for them. i beleive you need to have a bsn and many schools will pay for you to get your masters. that way you could still be "in the nursing game"

i actually think that getting your teaching certification is a viable option in your situation...there are more and more programs that provide alternate pathways for students who have a bachelors degree. my dad actually did an alternate route to certification years ago and i believe it took him about 3 months (it was a summer session-as most are, so unfortunately the timing isn't ideal for you right now).

teach for america is another great program. i actually have a friend who is doing this now and she loves it-she gets a decent salary, full benefits, student loan assistance and access to scholarships and grants if she wants to continue into post-graduate studies. and it seems like a really rewarding experience, not to mention it will look awesome on your resume!

you can always go back to nursing, but who knows-maybe you will find that teaching is your calling. either way, i believe that in every crisis lies opportunity, so keep exploring your options. its a lot better than sitting at your computer staring at the inbox all day and weeping ;)
