This hospital doesn't really have a new grad program, but they hire new grads. I was wondering if 6 weeks orientation they offer is enough?
California
How long usually of an orientation for a new grad to be comfortable? I know It depends on the person, I just want to know the average time for one nurse to be comfortable.
New grads: Med-Surg 6-8 weeks; ICU 4-6 months...sometimes even more time if needed!!!
1 week hospital orientation. 1 week tele class. Didactic classes: 2-3 weeks Med-Surg, 6-8 weeks ICU. Clinical time in between classes to make up hours during didactic. Continue orientation full time once classes are completed.
We have one of the longest orientation periods I've heard of in the area.
Six weeks sounds absurdly short. I think I got 12 as a new grad? I work in the ED now and our new grads get SIX MONTHS, as well as a yearlong residency program.
Six months? Holy cow! I started in a PCU (cardiothoracic surgical stepdown). We got 10 weeks and I ended up extending it to 12 weeks. Six weeks seems incredibly short to me as well. I'm not sure what the med-surg GNs get at my hospital.
Will do. Any personal tips before heading to my orientation? Any specific resources I can look up?
try and absorb as much as you can. you will not learn everything in these 6 weeks. always ask questions and never assume anything. DO NOT rush through anything because you're behind. that's the quickest way to lose your licenses. don't sweat getting fired because of being "SLOW"/time management... there will ALWAYS be other jobs.
