New Grad Starting at Good Samaritan Hospital- Los Angeles

Published

Hi!

I recently accepted a new grad RN position for ICU nights. I was wondering if anyone can tell me a little bit more information about the hospital (Their website was limited in providing info)? Employee satisfaction? New Grad Program success? I am also interested in relocating in Downtown..any suggestions??

Thanks!!!:wink2:

Congratulations on the ER job! I can't wait for February 9! I just hope my IP posts....it is stressing me out! As far as the pay rate, it is a lot higher around the areas where I go to school but none of the other hospitals I know of have time and a half after 8 hours or near the same level of benefits so I think it is pretty fair! I am DEFINITELY not commuting. LA traffic is way to intense for me. I am signing a lease for a place about 3 blocks away...pricey but my sanity is worth it. I can't believe you are going to drive 2 hours! Good luck and I look forward to meeting the 2 of you Feb. 9!! :)

My advice before you go back to sign your paperwork is:

I think it might be a good idea for you to call ahead and schedule your appointment with employee health so you don't have to make so many trips! I wish I had done so. Make sure to bring your certificates, social security card, and ID to HR & if you go to employee health bring your TB test results if you have any recent ones. There is a lot of paperwork but I'm sure you are expecting it!!!

yay...I was hired too..in the ER! starting the same date:) did you all find a place to live? I'm not familiar with the area and don't know where to look. any ideas? anyone need a roomie?

Has anyone taken the NCLEX yet or have it scheduled? Congratulations elle, the ER will be exciting! I'm really not familiar with LA myself. I'm coming from northern California! I looked at a scary apartment in Sherman Oaks so I don't suggest that area!

Specializes in ICU.

Hahaha Chico..Sherman Oaks is actually pretty nice (certain parts), but can get congested with traffic! When does your big move take place?!? Oh, Im already licensed :)..Took my test and passed in October. Are you taking a review course or studying on your own??

Specializes in ICU.

Elle and Chico..I forgot to ask, are you guys getting the same starting pay rate too??

Elle...Did they hire a clinical educator for the ER dept or create a new grad ER program?

I'm not a new grad...but will be going through a lot of the training since this is not my specialty:)...my pay is slighty different.

Congratulations! Yes, I took Hurst Review (it was great, I loved it!) I just need to schedule a test date, but I am waiting until my degree posts so I won't have a long waiting period for my results. My big move in date is February 7!!! I just finished all my lease paperwork today actually :)

Congratulations elle11 for the ER. I'm excited about it too. When I met with the Nurse Manager she gave me a really quick tour of it. It kinda looked small but manageable. Did you attend the Workshop they had in December? I didn't get the grand tour that everyone else had. How long have you been an RN? I graduated on Dec. 17th but Im also an LVN. After I completed the paper works on the 7th I looked around at the cheaper apartments in downtown LA since I'm not familiar with the area either. Almost everywhere looked scary and discouraging. One place called "The Commodore Apartments" was anything but an apartment and scary as hell. The lobby and halls were OK but that's it. It is only $800 a month, but the living space is about half the size of an ICU room. I ran out of there so fast i almost broke my foot :crying2:

Chico: Thanks for the reply and advise. I'm scheduled to take the NCLEX soon and I'm getting nervous every day. I'm studying like crazy but I already feel like I forgot everything. Congratulations on the apartment. I'm also trying to look anywhere for some where near the hospital. I checked out a luxury apartment on Wilshier called the TenTen. They guy told me another RN working at GoodSam just got a space there. It was an impressive building.

PS: anyone feel the earthquake that just happened?

I'm moving to 1010! He was probably talking about me, how funny!

Congratulations on your test! Are you taking it in Pasadena? I just started studying yesterday! I was giving myself a break, probably not the best idea, because now I'm stressing! Did you take a review course? How did it go? Might you be moving to 1010? If we work nights, we could walk to the hospital together!

I've been living in L.A. all my life, Down Town is too expensive for small places. you would do good looking for a nice place in the Mid-City area and you can get to Down Town really fast usin Venice Blvd or Pico Blvd.
