New Grad- 1st Job advice

Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new LPN (graduated July 2015 and passed boards November 2015). I interviewed and was offered a position as a school nurse. This will be my 1st job out of school. The pay is not the best but the schedule works best as I have a school age child with special needs. I'm excited but I'm also worried because I don't want to loose my clinical skills. I want to maintain my skills so I'm considering a PRN or part-time gig so that I can stay in practice with foley, trach care, wound care, etc.

Any suggestions for a PRN or part-time weekend job other than 3-11pm or 11-7am shift work at a nursing home?

Thanks UB

You could try pediatric home health care or hospice?

I second the home health and hospice PRN. Homecare cases always need fill in nurses.

Wow, congrats on your offer. Here (NJ) you need a BSN + a school nursing certificate (equivalent of 1/2 master's degree) to get a job as a school nurse.

My first job is home care, and I think it is a great job for a new grad. And if you want to go to school you will have time to study.

Thanks for the feedback. I've accepted a PRN home health job for weekends only. Monday thru Friday I'll be doing school nursing. Prayerfully the two work out and I'm able to stay up on my skills. Thanks again.

Yes, I need the study time. I plan to retake my sciences (they are more than 10 years old) to apply to RN school. Thank you.

I see its different in all states. I'm in Florida. The schools in my school district hire LPNs and there is an RN that comes to the school once a week to oversee what the LPN has done, paperwork, case management, etc.

Thats a really good schedule, i was hoping to do something like this once i get my license. How many hours week would you be scheduled at each job, and how much do they pay (if you dont mind me asking)

@Tattooed_LPN2b Hi, the school nurse job is Monday-Friday and its 40 hours per week at roughly $14 per hour. The home health job right now is one client that I see every Friday and Saturday night for a skilled nursing visit which lasts about an hour and it pays $22 per visit.
