New Grad RN Salary

Published

Hi All!

I'm a may BSN graduate with my RN. I am particularly interested in working in Northern NJ/Bergen County area. Many of the applications ask for requested or required salary and I never know what to write so I usually just say "negotiable." Anyway, I have an interview this Wednesday and I have no idea what to say if they ask me about salary. What is a normal salary for a new grad? Do I request that or do I request higher in the hopes that they'll say yes? Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for all of your help!

I would look at sites such as Payscale and Glassdoor to find out what a typical RN salary might be like in your area. You also might find some numbers if you look in the NJ section of AN:

You could put "negotiable" if you want but don't expect to truly negotiate as a new grad. Most hospitals have a set rate on what they pay new graduate nurses and there is usually not any room for negotiating until you gain experience.

For now, I would put what you find to be the "normal" new grad salary and would not request more than that. Good Luck in your job search!

I have found that to be sort of a silly question on nursing job applications. Because usually there is a set salary for new grads, nurses with x years of exp, nurses with certifications, etc.

when I was a new grad I put "open" and salary was never mentioned again until I got hired and they said "new grads start at $35/hr.....you will get such and such benefits......"

or if you prefer you could ask on here what the starting salary for that facility is. I'm sure someone here works there.

good luck!
