New grad relocating to Houston ... is it THAT bad out there?

Published

]Hi everyone,

So, I have been reading the countless threads on the new grad situation down in Houston, and being a new grad and basically planning to uprooting my life from Masssachusetts to Houston in a little less than 3 months I am truly starting to freak.

I have applied to 96 jobs within the past 10 days, have counted 35 rejections so far (some within 12 hours of applying!), and have not received neither call nor email. Is this really how it is??? I have applied to every internship available and any job requiring a year or less of experience. I have two bachelors degrees (one in Biology, the other being my BSN), and I was in an accelerated Nurse Practitioner program so have half of my masters under my belt. I have over 7 years clinical experience, and am currently working in a hospital as a CNA. I have great letters of recommendation, 3.4 GPA.... WHAT else could I possibly do?!?!

I am in a really tough position; I have to be out of my current apartment by June 1st, and if anyone knows anything about Mass they know the job situation is abou 10x worse than Houston (which is hard to believe). Even my current hospital has told me to my face that I have zero chance at a job.

That being said, does anyone have ANY advice?! I was going to call HR depts incessantly, but it seems as though that's not doing anyone good either. I will only be in Houston April 7-10 too, and I'm beginning to wonder if not being a resident is hurting me. I have my temporary Texas license already though, and my permanent Massachusetts license.

HELP PLEASE ... I just want to see if my constant anxiety and worry is warranted, or if I need to relax a bit. Thanks a ton :uhoh3:

Short answer, Yes.

Stay encouraged.

I graduated May 2010 and I still have class mates that are still job hunting. Look in the little towns outside major areas, Huntsville, madisonville, kingwood, etc. Hang in there

Dang, you sound very qualified so you think it wouldn't be that bad. I work for one of the big employers in the Med Center and my unit is HUGE...like over 200 RNs huge and we only took 3 interns this year.

UGH, so disheartening!! I don't know what to do ... I'm waiting on Ben Taub for an interview, so I'm hoping that goes through, but I'm sure there's limited positions there as well.

I have applied to Kingwood and all of those smaller hospitals; I have even applied to rehabs! I feel like I have to be missing somewhere, but I have applied to well over 100 jobs....

I'm going back to my home state soon, this is frustrating, my bank account is running dry

this is why getting your foot in the door prior to graduating is the best thing to do.. because at least they know who you are and your work ethics and also its easier to apply internally then externally.

Aww hnt, I'm sorry to hear - I was going to say we should meet for coffee to vent, I will be in Houston Thursday-Sunday next week! But I can only imagine ... have you legit been going out everyday going to HR's and stuff?

I haven't graduated yet, and there's not much I can do since I am in Massachusetts. It sounds like if you have clinicals at these places it helps a bunch, but it also seems to be working to my advantage that I have a bachelors and not an associates. I have informally been offered an interview at Ben Taub for the new grad program, and actually got a call today from Methodist for the OR internship. She asked me a ton of questions and told me the interview process and wanted to make sure I would be willing to fly down for the THREE interviews required ... she said another woman would be calling me to set up an interview.

I have been calling Cypress Fairbanks and Christus St. Catherine who both actually seemed to be the most promising, and cannot seem to get a call back from either Monica or Tia. Everyone seems to be dragging their feet but the interviews are slowly coming along.

I work at Methodist as a new nurse, and I know their ORs are constantly hiring, so if they call then definitely jump on it!

Good luck and don't give up!

Wow really? Well funny you say that because I got an interview today!! They called me tonight and I have one next Friday! It doesn't sound promising with the 6/300 odds, but you give me hope so thank you!! You were hired there as a new grad?

I'm actually going to Dallas this weekend before I go back to PA, I got my TX license, but so far no luck with nearby hospital.

I've an offer at TIRR Memorial Hermann but I did not take it due to my situation in Houston (Too far + No car).

Congrats! I know they were looking for a lot. Did they happen to say which OR?

I was hired as a GN, but I worked there as an SPN, and at the time they only hired on the ones that worked as SPN's except those who wanted to go to the OR. Word is they will be posting more GN positions later on, but I wouldn't wait around for that because it is all hearsay. I don't trust anything I hear unless I see it in writing!

Methodist is a great hospital with an amazing reputation. Look at their website and try to find some information about the various ORs so you will be able to ask questions. They are all good, but it depends on what you are looking for.

Hnt, how did you get the offer for TIRR??? you should TOTALLY take it!! Get a beater $1,000 car and make it happen! That's an awesome opportunity. Is that from the new grad program??

Ruby, out of the 6 positions, 3 are for ortho, and 3 are CV ... After 1st interview if you get a 2nd you have to write a letter explaining your choice. I am choosing CV... It's my dream to be in an OR with cabg's all day long so I was wicked excited. I just have this bad feeling by the time I get to my 2nd-3rd interview (if I'm so lucky), they'll have already filled the spots. :(

Staying positive though!

I moved to Houston March 1st and had an interview within days, I only have 9 months experience. Have you tried Long Term Acute Care? Its different than a nursing home. I really enjoy it, the pay is competitive and I'm learning a lot. Might not be the most glamorous job, but its a great place to get your feet wet. Select Specialty, Nexus, Triumph, and Kindred are usually hiring-- not always new grads but depending on how short they are they may consider.
