New grad : part time vs full time position! Help!

Hi all, I am facing a bit of a dilemma. I graduated in June, passed nclex in August and have been looking all over the country for a job. In October I interviewed at a community hospital in Pennsylvania and was hired a few weeks ago. I'm due to start on Monday. When I applied, the position said it was 24 hours a week (the unit has 8 hr shifts). When I interviewed with the NM, she mentioned that the position was every other weekend, 11-7. But when I got the offer letter from HR, it stated the position was 24 hrs a week. Did I mention the hospital is 75 miles away? It is a pediatric unit, but mainly they deal with "overflow" from other units, and they also have an IV infusion center on the floor. The nurse manager stated I could also cross-train on the l&d unit, which is on the other side of the floor.

On the other hand, I got a call from HR at the hospital that my mom works at. The nurse recruiter mentioned that a couple of the unit directors are very interested in meeting with me. One manages a few of the critical care units, and the other director oversees the med-surg units. I feel kind of torn because I am not sure what to do. As far as pay, the hospital in Pennsylvania is starting me off at $24/hr. From what I've heard from new grads at my mom's hospital, they start them off at $25/hr. It is also full time and much closer to home.

Not sure what to do!!

Where is your heart? Do you want to work with children or adults? Do you want to work critical care? Start work on Monday, but interview at the other hospital. Do not mention that you've already accepted a position. If you get an offer, approach your manager and very openly explain your situation. Explain that you thought you were going to get more hours and now you have these *two* offers that are full time positions. Either she will offer you more hours or let you go on the spot. It really depends on what type of nursing you want to do. If your heart is in pediatrics, stay where you are for a year while picking up extra hours overtime, and then get a full time position at a closer hospitals once you get some experience.

Thanks for the advice. Everyone has been very kind & welcoming at this hospital, and it makes my decision a lot harder :-(

Well I went to the interview but I don't know if it went so well. But that's okay! At least I still have another job, and I get the opportunity to be cross trained on the maternity floor , as well as the ED. While I would love to not commute so far, I'm just so thankful to have an opportunity to continue my nursing career :)
