where are the most new grad opportunities?

U.S.A. Texas

My husband and I wish to relocate from CO to TX. Where are there RN new grad jobs? We are looking for somewhere long term, not just some crappy place that needs nurses to get experience. My husband is liking Austin but I heard that it's a rough market right now. Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Specializes in NICU Level III.
21 dollars an hour is VERY low. Not sure about the comment of the nurses being young. I work in a major hospital in the Medical center, and I will say on average, the average age of a GN on my unit (ER) is about 35. Not too young. I think the market in Houston is probably the best, but they do have a lot to chose from with all the local nursing schools. Good luck.

Yeah it seems our new grads are half fresh from high school and half second careers. 21 is pretty low for Houston though, esp the med center.

Specializes in OR Hearts 10.

21 for anew grad is pretty average for TX (no state income tax) and much of the south. We like new grads here in Longview (NorthEast corner)

Specializes in Critical Care.

Avg. GN pay I am hearing is between 25-26 and some change in and outside of the medical center. Outside of the medical center being the lower end. This is also without shift differentials or critical care diffs.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I fully agree with you that a $21 hourly pay rate is low for an RN.

However, there is at least one hospital system in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that is still paying their new grad RNs in the $21 range per hour. Baylor Hospitals have been starting off new grads at about $21.50 this year. Hopefully they will get with the program and raise the pay, because we know and do entirely too many things just to be thrown a bunch of peanuts.

Hi to the OP I am current RN student at Concorde. I think you were in my Leadership Clinical at the nursing home in Lakewood...? Well I am very intersted in hearing about where you think is a good area of Texas to move to. Can we exchange e-mails? Not sure how everything works here with the allnurses account yet. I am thinking that texas is the place to go right after graduation and want to get going on researching it now. Ok thanks I'll look forward to hearing from you!

Kirsten2010! Sorry it took me so long to respond!!! Where are you now? I would love to hear how you are doing. We stayed in CO and I am working at a long term care facility. Not ideal but it's a job. Hope you are well!

I live and go to school in DFW and currently looking for GN positions, more specifically in Dallas area. Did you say when you are planning to move? Well, to me (as an active GN job hunter) it seems like a stiff market. Keep in mind that around Dallas, there are LOTS of nursing programs which means lots of people looking for the same jobs. A lot of hospitals got budget cuts this year and the first place to cut back on is GN positions, so the ones that are available are very competitive.
