Okay so i'm from the bay area and the job market just seems to be getting worse. I graduated with my BSN in December and have had zero luck. I'm interested in moving to Reno and would really love to work for renown. I've applied online and left mesages but no one has gotten back to me. There seem to be a number of new grad positions online and I know some hospitals down here are posting jobs that they already have filled and I guess I was just worried that was the case here as well. Any advice/info would be appreciated. Thanks again

I moved away in December, but I'd be persistent and try to get a hold of the recruiters. They tend to hire new grads this time of year and in December/January when the nursing schools there graduate new nurses.
Good luck! What specialty are you interested in?
I did my senior preceptorship in the ED which i loved, I'm also interested in the ICU but right now I would honestly take anything I was offered. The jobs are just so scarce I feel like I can't afford to be picky but it seems like renown has a lot to offer someone interested in a specialty. I just need to get that first job
OK, well, if you're trying for the ICU, I can only suggest that you contact the nurse manager for the unit you want to work in directly...especially if you've already submit your application online. The critical care recruiter was never prompt at answering calls and seemed rather aloof - why would he call people back when he has eyebrow sculpting and a hairdo to attend to? LOL Anyhow, I worked Roseview ICU and it was a good environment for a new grad. It is a MICU/SICU. They also have a trauma ICU and a cardiac ICU.
Thanks for the info. I actually got called back and have an interview. So now I just have to worry about that. I am still amazed I even got a phone call, I'm hoping northern nevada isn't quite as harsh on new grads as the bay area and am crossing my fingers and doing some hw.

Or you can work for cardiac ICU which is where i work. It's about 50/50 mix of cardiac and medical ICU. Plus you get to learn balloon pump and open heart surgery stuff.
All i know is that there are going to be at least 8 new grads coming up to our floor soon. We're always looking for some nurses.
They aren't that harsh. My interview mostly consisted of basic interview questions, asking about me, my personality, why I wanted to work in the ICU - as a new grad they aren't grilling you on practice-type questions. If you're coming over for an interview, you may want to look into interviewing for all units you're interested in working in - the ED and all 3 ICUs may be a good idea.
Good luck!!!

Good luck! I am in the Bay Area, graduated in March, licensed in April and really discouraged in May!!! Hope you get the job! What's the pay like out there?
In Reno, the new grad pay was $27.21, I believe, at Renown. Much less than the Bay Area, yet must less cost of living also.

When I left the ICU at Renown in early 2007, I was making $28.26 (I graduated in June '05). Renown was the lowest paying facility in the area when I worked there; I left to make a little more money and work closer to home. But that being said, I LOVED working in the ICU...until we lost a significant amount of experienced critical care RN's. When your charge nurse has less than a year of experience in critical care and you are one of the more experienced nurses with less than 2 years...well, it was time for me to leave! I do miss the trauma blue excitement at times and all the neuro patients. Great place to work if you love being busy and total patient care (I loved not having to rely on CNA's and other ancillary staff to care for my patients).
