Venofer
Our policy does not state to give it at the beginning of treatment. I agree with SmilingBluEyes that it'd be better to give it early to monitor for any side effects.

Reno/Sparks RN salary?
With 5 years of experience, I'd say you'd hit anywhere from 30-35 / hr. Maybe more. If you'd be PRN, you'd probably be closer to 40. It depends what hospital but I can see NNMC paying 35-40/hr per diem. Reno / Sparks - all pay generally the same. If you want higher pay, then work in Carson City.

Is there still a nursing shortage?
It's tough. When I first became a nurse, we had so many new grads from California spilling over into Nevada. The new grads could not find a job unless you wanted to work at a SNF. After a year at our hospital, the California grads moved back into their state and got their "dream" job. The hospitals around here always have open positions. Almost half of the cardiac ICU staff is travelers. We have a shortage here in our area.

I finally got into dialysis with Davita
That's really low. I've heard of nurses making 22-23 in the south but wow that's surprising.

new grad dialysis position
I consider it a great starting point since you'll gain valuble assessment skills and that nursing intuition (kind of hard to describe). We have hired new grad nurses in our in-center department but that was because they were PCT's at the time. From what you've described in your previous post, having immediate employment is probably the way to go. You already have dialysis experience with cannulation and machine troubleshooting (SUPER PLUS - since you won't be calling biomed every issue you have) In regards to your career, dialysis can take you to many places too. You can go into home modalities (PD/HHD), educator, nurse manager, transplant, clinical support, etc. You can stay in the dialysis field your whole career because nursing is so versatile. I do not see why you can't move to another nurse specialty such as cardiac. Nurses with experience can find jobs a little easier than a new grad. You'll be just fine going into either field. Here is what our county website wants in a school nurse. Experience in public health or school nursing is highly recommended but not mandatory. Three years of clinical nursing experience in pediatrics, critical care, or maternal-child health is desirable. Just food for thought.

new grad dialysis position
I do agree with the previous poster. Acutes is very independent. Most new grads do not last in acutes based upon my observations with our acutes program. That is not to say that you may love it and do acutes for a long time. You will go through many experiences in cardiac (open hearts, LVAD's, PCI, Etc) that you can put under your belt. I loved my experience with CVICU .

Dialysis RN working time
It depends on which clinic you work in. The opening tech is usually at the clinic at 4am with Water room duties and getting machines fired up and set up. Usual routine is 5am RN start with looking at water check, med count, assessments due for plan of care, fridge temperatures for labs and meds, etc. 1st patient put on is from 5:30 to 6. You work till 5 PM or as a closer of the unit 7pm. Typically working 3days/week. Nurses may leave when patient census drops to 12.

New Grads at Renown
I really don't know nowadays since I haven't worked there since 2011. I am hoping that someone will chime in on the topic. Your instructors may know more about that then I do.

Volunteering/Working
There is always a benefit to volunteering your time . I worked during nursing school doing per diem CNA work and eventually landed a nurse apprentice gig in the Renown CIC. If you are thinking of doing it and it won't interfere with your studies then it will be worthwhile.

burnt out after one year?
Sounds like you need a change before you truly get "Burnt Out" and you are showing signs of it. you aren't Crazy for thinking that way. Find another job doing something different in nursing. I went from CVICU to dialysis and do not regret the change. It's not as stressful.

SICU at Renown in Reno - is my recruiter hiding something?
Travelers will float at Renown, especially during the day shift.. They opened up our old CIC in the Sierra tower (Station 41) as an ICU overflow. They are staffing them with travelers as far as I know. We get a lot of per diem that float from the Sierra ICU and Roseview ICU to help staff CIC. As far as i'm concerned ... we welcome the travelers and floats to our unit. We make sure we get them as much help because I don't want to be tripled up. TJ
