New Grad NICU in Houston

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi, I know there are a lot of posts here, but I'm getting overwhelmed navigating through them all and trying to sort out what is outdated information.

I am graduating in May and planning to move to either Houston or Dallas. I am determined to work in a NICU. I currently extern at a hospital in the city where I am going to school, and work in the NICU there.

I am not very familiar with the Houston area. I know that there is a NICU at Memorial Hermann and Texas Children's, but would like to know other options. I also am wondering where I could find contact info for nurse recruiters so I can get more information on the timeline for the GN internships. I can't seem to find it anywhere...I would have thought it would be easier to find. OR, if anyone here has any information, I would LOVE to hear it :o)

Both Dallas and Houston are absolutely saturated with new grads, with an average of 600 applicants per new grad opening. Not only will it be difficult/impossible to get a new grad NICU internship but it will be difficult to get your foot in the door for any internship in the major cities in Texas without networking connections. I would strongly recommend you not move here without a job already lined up.

Internships that post for this coming summer generally will start to show up in March/April timeframe. They don't follow any set schedule for posting them and you will want to check the hospital websites daily. With so many applications coming in, sometimes they only remain up for a matter of hours before HR decides to take it down.

Good luck to you.

Definitely don't move here w/o a job lined up. Having NICU experience in school as my capstone course I think helped me out.

As for other options for Houston NICUs, there is Woman's Hopsital of Texas in the med center, St. Joseph Medical Center downtown, MANY outlying Hermann NICUs other than the Medical Center. Cypress-Fairbanks, Oakbend, erm...can't think of any more right now.

Thanks! Of course I won't move without a job first :) I am just trying to get a list of hospitals together to keep my eye on for new grad postings.

NICU is very popular, and as others said, this area is saturated with new grad BSN and Adn new grads... just prepare yourself that you may not get a NICU intersnship, or ANY internship at all. I would seriously have some sort of back up plan, if not, you will just have to learn the hard way :(

Be prepared to not get any internship at all? I'm sorry, but is there a plethora of new grads not being employed or am I missing something? I just wanted to know what hospitals have NICUs. Of course I have back up plans.

Yes, there IS a plethora of new grads not getting jobs!! That is what we have been trying to tell you. The market for new grads in the major cities in Texas stinks. More than half the graduating class from last May at my school STILL have not found work! Not just not finding work in NICU or other high demand areas. We are talking not finding work at all. Not in Med/Surg, not in SNFs, not in LTAC and definitely not in high demand specialty areas like NICU, L&D, pediatrics, ER, etc. It is extremely hard for nurses without experience to find opportunities right now unless willing to go extremely rural (more than 1.5 hours from a major city) or to the Texas/Mexico border towns. Finding a NICU internship when you don't even live here is going to be next to impossible. Not completely impossible, but pretty darn close to it. That is why every poster is encouraging you to open up your options and not move without an offer in writing. The job market for new grads in Texas is close to a standstill even for the less desirable jobs, let alone for the high demand ones. The hospitals are not hiring new grads.

I'm sorry to hear about your classmates. Do you mind if I ask where you went to school? I can't say that I've heard of this being an issue from any of the graduates in our December class. I didn't know many in the last May class, so I can't speak for them. I guess I wasn't aware of the shortage of jobs for new grad bsn students. I just want to make it clear that I do have back up plans. I work/go to school a couple hours east of Dallas. I do have a job waiting for me at my current hospital when I graduate. However, I would prefer to be closer to family, as I have none here. NICU is my dream job, and I am pursuing that. I am aware that it will be difficult to land this job straight out of school, and I will take what I can get. I was asking a specific question about NICUs in Houston....although I am more likely going back home to Dallas. I didn't feel that writing out my whole list of plans and back up plans was necessary to get an answer to the simple question of "which hospitals in Houston have NICUs?"

I am not comfortable disclosing my school but will tell you it is in no way a second rate school. Quite the opposite in fact. I was under the impression you are not in Texas. If you live here, you may have a better shot at getting a job if you have connections. It is fortunate you have one waiting when you graduate. I am pretty shocked though that you are not aware of the lack of jobs waiting for new grads. It is pretty much a fact, whether you are BSN or ASN. Sorry to have ruffled your feathers. Best of luck in your endeavors.

Texas Children's Hospital (Houston area) has a fb career page and if you scroll down you will find a posting from them that states they had over 600 applicants for a Med/Surg new grad position. For some reason there is a rumor that there are tons of jobs here so students are flooding the market. There are plenty of BSN students with great GPA's from top schools who cant get a job here. There is no shortage of nurses here. I dont know about Dallas. If I were you I would take the job you were offered at your current hospital or if jobs are plentiful where you are maybe get some experience at a NICU there for a year then apply here.
