New grad moving to Boston from CA

Hey Everyone,

I am a new grad moving from the Bay Area to Boston and from what I have

heard on this board the oppurtunities for new grads in Boston are few. If

it makes you feel any better my entire class is having problems getting

new grad positions in the Bay area. We are all asking, "What nursing shortage?".

Anyway, I have applied to several Boston Hospitals and am

feeling that they really arent interested in an out of state new grad.

Can anyone offer any advice? I feel like I am going to have to work

as a nursing assistant in MA before they will even consider hiring me.

I also feel that they wont consider hiring me until I actually move to

MA in a month or two. Any words of wisdom?

Plenty of jobs for new grads outside Boston. Unfortunatly I think most of the Boston hospitals prefer BSN and most require it, and they also seem to prefer to hire within or new grads who have done clinicals in their hospital. Just my oppinion, but again their seem to be plently of new grad jobs outside of Boston. I got one in an ER, but it is about 40 miles outside of Boston.

I will have a BSN which will hopefully help me out, but I am new to the industry and have little experience besides my clinical rotations. I'll take your suggestion and start looking outside of Boston. Are there any particular areas/hospitals outside of Boston that you would recommend? I am very thankful for your feedback.

Are nursing internship programs the same thing as new graduate programs?

Ya, I'd like no know where the nursing shortage is too!!

All the big hospitals in boston have new grad programs.. (MGH, Brigham, BI, Children's, BMC, etc..) It just varies by hospital and even varies by floor what the program is like. Like how many weeks, whether you take classes along with floor time, etc..

Instead of waiting for hospitals to post jobs specific to new grads, I would recommend applying to any job on the job sites that you qualify for (ie: med/surg, cardiac, etc.) and ones that you only kinda qualify for (ie: says 2 yrs experience for med/surg, apply anyways!) that's what I ended up doing @ mgh and how I got a job there! If you had a lot of clinicals or work experience with cardiac patients, apply to cardiac.. or if you had oncology, apply to oncology.

I also think a good cover letter is REALLY important.

well thanks everyone!

I ended up moving back to the Bay area where I got a new grad job in the ICU making more money. Thats the specialty area I wanted anyway.

All the nurse recruiters in Boston told me they wouldn't be hiring till early next year and some told me out right to move out of Boston. On top of this the person I moved for completely bailed on me when I got to Boston....So I happily went back to the bay area.

I found it really shocking that the cost of living in Boston is equal to the bay area, yet nurses are paid about half what they are paid in the Bay area.

If I saw your post in May, I would discourage you from moving from CA to MA. For the reason that you stated above "the cost of living in Boston is equal to the bay area, yet nurses are paid about half what they are paid in the Bay area."

yeah, um i am from southern cali and still looking for a job. have my bsn!! have gone to job fairs, applied everywhere, etc...

I have been applying for at least 6 months. its sad...... im keeping the faith that something will work out....:balloons:

Don't give up! I am sure that you will get a job soon! Children's Hospital is having an open house (it may be for experienced nurses) tomorrow from 12 to 5 I believe. Keep searching! At BI (Beth Israel) they are hurting for nurses!!!! I have the name of the HR person who handles new nurses. Good luck
