New grad LVN Dr. wants to pay me $10???

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello my fellow nurse. I hope everyone is having luck with their Job Search. I know I'm not!

So here's the story. A friend of mind who see's a psych doctor mentioned me to her and the doctor asked my friend to have me call her. So I did and she wants to drop by at her clinic. I arrived 20min. early and waited about 40min for the interview.

She interviewed my while she was talking to the other two gentlemen who was also waiting for her to discuss about abilify. So it was like a conference/interview and she introduced me to these gentlemen as well and I have to act or pretend that I am listening to them while they explain to the doctor about the drugs. And when the speaker turn to other person the doctor would asked me questions. And so basically every questions that she asked me and told me about the job description was heard by at least 4 people. And I think the most embarrassing part was when she said the pays $10 per hour.

When I first arrived at the clinic I introduced myself as a nurse to the staff and I looked as professional as I can be. And then there I was, in the middle of a conference offered a job for $10/hr.

I was excited and all because at first she said "well this is a part-time job and you will mainly check pt's VS and report to me and write my prescriptions" and the mentioned that I can either work 2 full days 9-6 or work 4 half days and i can choose whatever day i want.

oh, and another thing, she said that I will not actually hold a position as an LVN and all I will do is VS, answer phone calls and or other front desk clerical jobs, but she said mostly I will be her assistant. ( I think even clerks or receptionist or other UAP get paid way more than $10)

Now, my dilemma. I have a 2 year old who goes to a preschool when of course I need to go work for her. $10 wouldn't even enough for one day at the pre-school?

But the bright-side is, she works at St. Joseph hospital in Orange county (I am from Orang btw) so I think if I can work for her I can have her refer me to that hospital? if she even agree to do so?

I feel like I have been insulted somehow and I just want to cry! But at the same time I think it's better than nothing? or at least this will get my feet wet?

Please Please Please! I need somebody to tell me that there are jobs out there so I don't have to take a $10 job just to get my feet wet!

I'd be somewhat insulted too. She's trying to hire a nurse to do a medical assistant/receptionist job. If you want to get your foot in the door in a doctor's office situation (is that what you're hoping to speicalize in?), than it would probably be good to get some experience under your belt and you can continue to look for a full time position. But if you're wanting to be a bedside nurse, this job won't really give you the experience you need.

Not really. I don't have any particular area that I have decided I want to specialized in. I just want a job anywhere I guess. But maybe not getting paid $10/hr

Thank you for your insight.

PS. I also had an interview 4 days ago at another doctors clinic and I think it went very well. They said they should make a decision by this week. I sent a THANK YOU email right after my interview and I expressed my interest on the job again and I think that job fits my interest and all.

I also sent an application for an MA job in a busy clinic and I got an email today requesting for my contact number.

So I think there is something out there really! :sniff:

The entire situation was disrespectful from the time you walked in the door. To place icing on a pancake, she offered you $10 an hour to perform clerical duties for her.

To have an appropriate referral from this physician would mean working for her well over 6 months. The fact that she is unprofessional enough to bring you into another meeting ,and discuss other duties speaks volumes on her conductivity/organization in the work place. If you are in desperate need of a job, take it. If you can hold out for a little while longer, pass it up. You already said the job doesn't pay well enough to meet your cost of living. Her being an associate of the hospital does not mean she has direct connections with the hospital staff or HR personnel.

The pay is insulting, even if the job does not require any utilization of medical skills(which I am guessing in the coming months if you take the job you will be telling us how you were hired for clerical, but ended up with a flow chart). A MA makes more than $10 a hour. Don't let the word "recession" cause you to be abused. The ones who will take anything because they're fearful of being easily replaced learn in due time.

WOW, I hope you ran and never looked back. Trust me, someone with the gall to interview under those circumstances does not have enough pull anywhere in their body to refer you to anything better. Trust me, I have worked for people like her (thankfully in a non-nursing job years before I entered the nursing prodession) and I was destined to never do any better unless I made the first move. They take advantage of the desperate. Like I said, RUN and never look back!! You are worth more than that.

I'd be very wary.

First, the unprofessionalism in the way you were interviewed is a red flag.

Second, the pay is low (do you know averages in your area)

Third, you wouldn't be getting LVN experience, by your own description.

Fourth, and most importantly, the Dr. stated that you wouldn't hold a position as an LVN. Which means that you cannot even claim this job as LVN experience, since you are not going to be employed as an LVN, but as an assistant.

One more thing, are you sure you want to work at the psychiatrist's office where your friend seeks therapy?

Be careful...

I think personally, I wouldn't do it. This doctor seems very disrespectful from the beginning. You might end up hating your job if you work for her. Keep your foot in the door by other activities like volunteering. I would keep applying for other positions. There are many other opportunities out there that would not make you feel demeaning.

unless you are desparate, run and don't look back. the fact that she would interview you, disclose salary during a meeting with 2 others is beyond the pale and says alot about her lack of character. That is just a shadow of things to come.

I would decline and keep it moving. $10! MAs make more than that and after a few weeks of being hired, I bet she will slowing start to draw on your LPN skills. No bueno!
