New Grad looking to move to SF area

Published

Hello,

I will graduate with my BSN in mid December. My fiancé is in the early stages of conversation with a company in SF. We are in Denver, so this would be a big move. I a curious to know what the job situation looks like in the SF area for new grads. We don't plan on living in the city and understand the commute will be awful and the cost of living will still be ridiculous. I am most interested in knowing how easy or difficult finding a job may be. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Up there with winning a lotto ticket. If you don't have a very good connection and years of experience, it's incredibly hard to get a job. There are very few new grad positions and 1000s of applicants for every job. Many new grad jobs are on call or part time to start as well with 8 hour shifts. With rent cost, I can only imagine the stress of trying to make that work.

Agreed Nicki. I just relocated here in August and was lucky enough even to get an ER Tech job while I was waiting (Since May) to take my NCLEX. Took my NCLEX yesterday and am hoping to get hired into my ER as a new grad should I pass. I've been looking almost every day since I've been here and there's very few new grad postings.

i live in sf and was able to land a hospital job after 1 year in SNF. That being said it is quite difficult for a new grad with no experience to land an acute care nob, not impossible. to keep costs down for rent id look in places such as daly city (slightly colder region) or south san francisco, further south such as millbrae and san mateo are much nicer but also more expensive. commuting actually isnt too bad. my advice: get your résumé looked at and polished, start applying and calling to follow up. SF is a beautiful place to live, feel free to pm me if you have questions regarding it

I am a new grad who just moved to San Jose after seven years in Hawaii. I agree with NickiLaughs that if you haven't done clinical here it is tough to compete with those who have as they cannot even get jobs. There is a facebook group called "New Grad RN--Bay Area" that will confirm what has been said here but is also very helpful with job postings and advice. I was lucky enough to get a New grad position 3 months after moving but I was told to expect 9-12 months of job searching before I landed anything :(

It is possible to get a job but my advice is line up any job (preferably healthcare) before moving here because it will be a while before you get a RN job. Good Luck!
