New Grad: license & DUII

Published

:nurse:Hi all. This is my first post here so forgive me if i make any mistakes. I just graduated with my BSN and passed my NCLEX. I am awaiting my license but the oregon state board of nursing is stuck on my background check. I have two DUIs. One was in 98 and one was in 2003. I have not drank since the 2003 one. I also am a very active member of the recovery community although i don't think that is on record anywhere, that I know of. I also completed residential treatment right after the 2003 one. That is not probably on record either that i can imagine. Does anyone have any idea of how this might turn out for me? I am going crazy waiting and the board cannot tell me anything. Thanks for your help!

questions we seem to be encountering more and more often have to do with the effects of a criminal history on nursing licensure:

  • is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a criminal history and if so, can i get a job?
  • is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a mip, dui, or other related charges?
  • what happens if you are charged or convicted of a crime after licensure?
  • can i go to nursing school and/or be licensed/be employed if my record has been sealed or expunged?
  • will i be able to go to nursing school and/or attend clinicals with a criminal record?
  • what can happen if i receive a mip/dui/dwi or other charge while still in school?

these are questions that the members of allnurses.com cannot answer. the only reliable source of information is your state board of nursing.

if you are currently licensed as a nurse or awaiting licensure and have been charged with or convicted of a felony or misdemeanor including dui/dwi or any criminal offense, you need to contact the bon in every state you hold a license/wish to be licensed and ask their reporting requirements.

oregon's nclex exam application for us graduates states if you have a criminal history need to send explanatory information on seperate sheet of paper and will delay processing. dui conviction is considered possitive criminal history by bon.

need to review what you signed as not reporting yes to criminal history is considered falsification of application and grounds not permitting nclex att and license denial.
