I am graduating nursing school tomorrow and have landed a GN OB Triage. I am beyond excited :yeah:about having been given this positon as my dream job is L & D. I will be working at our local county hospital so I will be seeing just about everything there is to see. Can someone give me some insite as to what an OB Triage nurse may see or handle on a daily basis. Thanks in advance for any information

I am kind of surprised that you will be working in OBT right away. I am at a county hospital too and I was hired as a GN under the OBT cost center, but didn't actually work in triage for well over a year. Most hospitals only put the most experienced nurses in OBT since it is a pretty high acuity environment. BTW, I am in TX too. If you want to PM me we can talk about which hospital you might be at.

just started OB, some things ive seen
falls, uncontrolled glucoses, low/high AFI, h/a with increased BP maybe indicative of preeclampsia, hernias, painful bulging hemmroids- went to the OR, Popped blood vessels in nose continued nose bleeds like 800-1000 ml lost -did a C-sec at 38 weeks, braxton hick contractions, SROM- spontaneous rupture of membranes with or without increased temperature, chorio, mom questioning if she ruptured her membranes- biggie, pain in abdomen, bloody show, no fetal movement for more than 24 hrs, UTI, hydronephrosis....
hope this helps

I agree with this. IMO, it takes a lot of experience and a decisive, confident personality (which comes with time and experience) to be good at OB triage. It's certainly not a position I'd give to a new grad.
Good luck to you.

How many deliveries does your facility do a year? As triage, be prepared to see it all. You say country hospital, so I am thinking that you will ship out any higher than normal acuity patients? So be well versed in IV starts, f/c placements, tocolytics, assessment skills for previas, abruptions, PROM, ect. But hopefully, you just get easy peasy to break you in and have a great mentor and long orientation session. :) Congrats!

I just got a job here in TX as well at one of the county hospitals in L&D. What county are you in?
