I am graduating nursing school tomorrow and have landed a GN OB Triage. I am beyond excited :yeah:about having been given this positon as my dream job is L & D. I will be working at our local county hospital so I will be seeing just about everything there is to see. Can someone give me some insite as to what an OB Triage nurse may see or handle on a daily basis. Thanks in advance for any information

Not to burst anybody's bubble but I don't think it's a good idea for a new nurse to take a job in Triage.

Triage is one of those areas in which tons of experience come into play. In my humble opinion, each unit should staff triage with the most skilled nurse on the unit that day and use those nurses to train and mentor others.

Triage nurses are ER nurses and OB nurses all rolled up into one and you have to have a nose for recognizing lots of subtle signs and symptoms because ultimately you are the one communicating all the info to the MD's and discharging that patient.

Please make sure they give you a long orientation and learn as much as you can and take as much time as you can.

Good luck with everything.

Be sure to be especially aware of symptoms that be indicate emergencies like abruption, imminent delivery, preeclampsia, etc. You always have to be prepared for these even though they can be rare (preeclampsia isn't all that rare to be honest). One big tip... don't be afraid to ask for help or question your judgement.

Good luck to you!
