Thanks everyone!
No, unfortunately my school didn't offer preceptorships. I joined both NANN and AWHONN last year and volunteered at a crisis pregnancy center over winter break, which helped boost my resume. I was out of town visiting my family when I visited this hospital and left my cover letter, resume, and references for the nurse manager. (This was back in December when I did this!) I think the key was my cover letter, which I wrote from my heart and specifically for the position-- I wrote about my clinical experience in the NICU and the contributions I could make to the unit, along with how I fit in with hospital's mission and values. Anyway, I received a call a couple of weeks ago from the director saying that she was so impressed with my letter that she has kept it on her desk since then and that she had been waiting for an opening to come available for me to interview for! I had my interview this past week and got the official offer on Friday! I will be moving several hours away for this position, and it will be completely worth it!!
I have spent countless hours on allnurses for the past year reading all the advice about resumes, cover letters, and interviews-- in addition to all of the tips and tricks to get noticed! This has helped SO much with the job search, and I'm so thankful that everything has worked out! I honestly never thought I would be one of 'those people' fortunate enough to write a post like this! Hopefully this advice will help someone as well! :)
