New Grad Interviews for AHS

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm currently writing this in tears because I found out I did not get the first RN job that I interviewed for. I interviewed for a surgery float position which was hiring 20 nurses, so I thought I had a great chance at getting the job. I'm a new graduate who didn't do their final placement on surgery, I've only ever done 6 weeks there. Knowing that they picked out my resume despite my inexperience gave me even more hope.

Well I think I ended up bombing the interview during the scenario questions. They asked so many of them, and when I would finish answering them to my best ability the one interviewer would ask "Okay and what else would you do?" I think he was looking for a lot more detail in my answers. I talked about the questions and answers with my friends after and they agreed that they would answer the same way I did.

I know that the interview process is standardized and the same questions are used for everybody, but do they not take someones inexperience into consideration? I was prepared to answer more questions about myself and how I'm eager and willing to learn, etc. I'm just wondering why I was even picked for an interview because any other nurse with more than 6 weeks experience will obviously know their stuff better than me.

PS. The job posting was for 20 positions, it now say it's filled and that there were 18 positions. Does that mean that me and some other person bombed it that bad that they didn't even want us for those vacant positions?

There were probably well over 100 applicants for those 20 positions. They likely interviewed 30 people, and as you've noted, only filled 18 spots. The standardized interview format they've been provided by corporate has a scoring tool that guides how they weight your application. No, make that dictates how they weight your application. Actual experience weighs far less than some other factors, in my personal experience. I was passed over for a position for which I was very well-suited for someone whose hire date (prior to her 3 mat leaves, a long-term disability leave and several years out of the specialty after that) was 6 months before mine - but her total calendar years in the specialty were 7 less. I didn't even get an interview and I was told that since "all else was equal" seniority was the deciding factor. Mule muffins. So don't take it personally. It probably had a lot less to do with you and a lot more to do with what HR told them to do.

Yup. AHS hiring is a crap shoot.

The general feeling in my building is HR has a plan and god alone knows what it is.

It also comes down to money. Why hire 20 if 18 will do?

Internal applicants are having a hard time moving. So brush up on your surgical knowledge and read up on what you were asked. So that the next time you interview you know what they are looking for.

Turns out I actually got the job, there is hope out there for new graduates!
