New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hi aelith,

i also plan to work in australia and i have relatives there (in Victoria)

i want to know the exact steps in being an RN in Australia

i pictured it out this way, but im not sure though:

1) Know the state you want to work in (in my case Victoria)

2) Apply for registration in that State's Board of Nurses for assessment

- my question is "can i apply if I don't have any working experience?"

-also, should that working experience be in a tertiary hospital, because that's what i've heard from my friends here

-lastly, i need to pass the ielts before i apply, right?? (actually i think i got to retake the test because i got 6.5 in writing)

3) if they assessed you as qualified they will invite you to take the bridging course

4) Finally, pass the bridging course then you'll become Aussie RN and you can work anywhere in AUSTRALIA, mission accomplished!!!

did i get it right??? i need help i believe heheh

thanks

Hello gast1986 :)

There are two pathways to become a Registered Nurse in Australia or in your case in Victoria.

1. Enroll in a pre-registered Nursing degree in any accredited/recognised program of the Universities by Nurses Board of Victoria.

Link of accredited Nursing courses in Victoria: http://www.nbv.org.au/media/43901/accredited%20courses%20div1.pdf

Here is another link for accredited Nursing Courses for Overseas Registered Nurses which will lead to registration in the Nurses Board of Victoria:

a. http://www.nbv.org.au/media/43913/accredited%20pre-reg%20courses%20oseas%20div%201.pdf

b. http://www.nbv.org.au/media/50024/accredited%20initial%20registration%20courses%20oseas%20div1.pdf

2. Directly applying for Registration in Division 1 at the Nurses Board of Victoria.

2.1. Fill out and print this form: http://www.nbv.org.au/media/43455/initial%20registration%20app.pdf

2.2. IELTS (Academic) result should have at least an overall band score of 7 with scores no less than the ones indicated below:

2.2.1. Reading & Listening 6.5

2.2.2. Writing & Speaking 7.0

2.3. Prepare all other necessary documents before lodging your application which includes the following:

2.3.1. Evidence of Identity (true copy of Passport or Birth Certificate)

2.3.2. Certified true copy of Transcript

2.3.3. Certified true copy of Diploma

2.3.4. Certificate of initial registration

2.3.5. Verification of Registration (As far as I know, you will need to go to PRC and ask them to send Nurses Board of Victoria the said certification)

2.3.6. Work Statement (if applicable)

N.B. The Nurses Board of Victoria does not specifically require one to have relevant nursing experience however if you do have, you are required to provide evidence of this. It does not specifically say if the experience would only be recognised if it is from a certain type of hospital (e.g. tertiary hospital).

2.3.7. Evidence of Change of Name (if applicable e.g. marriage certificate)

2.3.8. Enclosed Fee (kindly check the website for the updated fee as this change yearly i think)

2.4. Submit the application including all the documents needed and the fee.

2.5. Wait for the Nurses Board of Victoria's decision. It can be either of the following:

2.5.1. You will be granted registration in Division 1.

2.5.2. Your application will be denied.

2.5.3. You will have a conditional offer wherein you will be asked to undergo a bridging program. And upon successful completion of the program, you will be eligible for registration. However, if unsuccessful then you will not be eligible for registration.

N.B. If your application is unsuccessful, you can be given other options to help you be registered in the said state. This will most probably include taking up any of the recognised courses leading to registration in Division 1.

I hope the above helps you. If there's anything that you want to clarify, just tell me. I'll try and provide whatever I know. I have not included specific details about the bridging program in Victoria as you only asked for the process. However, if you want to know more about the bridging program, I can elaborate on my next post. :wink2:

Hi Aelith

Im planning to take the CAS for Queensland, Oz but has not yet started with the applications. Are you aware of their distance mode program? I learned that they are conducting the Challenge Test here in Phils. as well as the review programs but not quite certain of the location and the review center. Do you have any idea? Another thing is i dont of one person who finished the CAS and successfully employed as a nurse in Queensland. Can you please enlighten me.

Does QNC requires a work experience?

Thank you very much.

wow, this is what im looking for! the to-do-lists hehe

this is extremely useful, really

if only something like this is "stickied", the how-to-apply-for-australia threads would be fewer and informations would be easier to find

i think your post can summarize the 100+ threads in this forum with the same/related inquiries as mine

everything i need to know is here hehe

thanks a lot!

Hmm.. Hi I just wanted to ask if its true... that only purely BSN graduates are accepted in NZ and that there are minimum chances for 2nd coursers and shiftees (like me)

We have had a few second coursers post that they wasn't accepted. Each is done on an individual case so may be a case of you trying

@jreadz: There has been a lot of talk about the 2nd coursers and their applcation to NZ. To be able to confirm, it's best to email the nursing council of NZ. They do reply to your enquiries so that would be the best thing to do.

The link below provides basic information about NZ application.

As for the exact location of the test center in the Philippines, I still have to check with my friend. I don't know anyone who actually passed the whole challenge test however I know quite a few who are actually taking the exam and the modules.

QNC does not specifically require the applicant to have an experience but if the applicant do have any experience, he/she is required to provide evidence. The working experience will only be considered if it is paid, however, if not then it will not be recognised (e.g. voluntary work experience).

I have heard about Queensland's nursing opportunity a couple of months back but did not take the application seriously. But after reading through the threads at allnurses.com I think I might submit my application anytime soon. It is so good to know that I am not alone on this and many are interested about nursing in Queensland.

Trion08: Have you gone through the links Aelith has disclosed? Let me know if you will be pursuing, maybe we can help each other and share some insights too..

Hello Shish, yep im considering Queensland. I have not yet started with my application, im seriously studying it because of the lack of opportunity here in PI. One more thing, i dont have any relative in QLD thats why Im a bit afraid on how I may end up there. How about you?

Glad to know there's somebody interested too in QLD. Hope we can help each other and evrybody else.

Thanks.

Hello Aelith, thank you for the infos. Its a big help. Are you applying too in QLD? How do your friends find the exam and the modules? Is it hard, time consuming etc.?

Hope you could PM me the review center or the agency. Thanks again.

Im joining this boat ride. I, too, am a fresh grad and just passed the 2008 board exam. Has anyone here started working on his/her application? Ive been wanting to start this long process asap, unfortunately, i still do not have my license number and it will be released in november. By the way, I-e mailed an agency in australia, and the consultant suggested that i try applying in victoria since i do not have any experience yet. What would be the difference between queensland and victoria? and which could be faster?
