New CNA Decertification Petition Filed

Published

Nurses at Inland Valley Medical Center in Riverside County, California have filed to decertify the California Nurses Association.

Numerous other nurses have unsuccessfully attempted to decertify in recent months. While the CNA may gloat in the aftermath of these attempts, a lot must be said for the statement these decertification filings are making. Nurses are not happy with CNA representation and they are making their feeling known! The CNA is NOT the voice of the Nurses of California. This is why the CNA has formed the NNOC and is attempting to spread to other states, in some cases actively raiding other unions.

Thanks,

SherwoodRN

Wrong! Sherwood works at Western Medical Santa Ana where CNA had an election and lost! you can find this on http://www.stopunions.com

Read the stopunions.com website and you will quickly see that it is republican backed rhetoric designed to fool us into thinking we are better off without representation. The only real benefit to no union is no union dues. I gladly pay dues to the only people fighting for MY right to a living wage, decent patient ratio's and job protection.

Ok ... the only thing I could find on Western Medical was this paragraph:

"March 2005: Western Medical Center Santa Ana. United Healthcare Workers West/SEIU wants to organize all NON-RN's in your facility. Hoping to have an election by the end of April 2005."

That union election doesn't have anything to do with RN's or CNA ... and I don't see anything about CNA losing a vote at Western Medical. Nor could I find anything with a google search.

Yeah ... this whole thing about the union dues is also a fallacy. Even if the dues are $1,000 a year, you still come out way ahead because you're making an average of $7,000 a year more than non-union RN's make.

That's a $6,000 a year net benefit, which is a 600 percent rate of return on your union dues investment. You can't do any better than that with any other investment.

You're right. All of this is designed to distract people from the real issue ... which is ... hospitals do not want to pay RN's more money.

Amen. As someone, who has worked at both Union and non Union facilities, I know the rhetoric that Admin. loves to spout to stop unionization.

The first one is wages. Admin. always tells staff that they don't need unions to get good wages. Let's see, at my recent job interview, a non union facility offered me $10 an hour less then what I currently make at my Union facility.

The second one is benefits. Sorry the non union facilities, can't even come close to what CNA has been able to negotiate at the Union facility.

What usually happens is that Admin. is going to promise the moon to staff as long as they vote against the Union. Once the Union has been defeated, Admin. backs out of their promises, and there are no changes in wages/benefits. In some instances, there has been "give-backs", because Admin. will claim they are having financial problems and couldn't possibly give increases or will threaten to start laying off staff.

I don't agree with everything that CNA does. However, I'm more than happy to pay $80 per month to get some of the best wages and benefits in the state.

As I recall, Sherwood works at Whittier Hospital, where CNA did win the election. But the anti-union Bush dominated National Labor Relations Board ruled that CNA couldn't represent RN's there because the facility was bought by a new owner. Same with Cedars Sinai, where CNA won the actual vote, but the NLRB threw out the election.

Just out of curiosity ... what recent elections has CNA actually lost, where they did not get the majority vote from RN's? Because the NLRB throwing out elections on technicalities is not the same thing as CNA losing the actual RN vote.

I have never worked at Whittier Hospital. I have worked and continue to work at Western Medical Center Santa Ana.

The CNA held an election there and LOST. We beat them on their terms despite the CNA Neutrality Agreement that has since been declared ILLEGAL. Nothing was thrown out on a technicality.

The CNA was thrown out of Whittier Hospital because of the Illegal Neutrality Agreement that the CNA demanded of Tenet Healthcare.

http://www.stopunions.com is not a "Republican backed website" as you would like to mislead people into believing. I have never accepted a dime from anyone or any organization to post what goes into the website.

In May of 2004 the CNA and West Med RN's voted to determine if the Nurses wanted the CNA to be their bargaining agent. After all the votes were counted the Nurses of Western Medical Center voted AGAINST CNA representation.

The CNA only announces votes they win. They NEVER announce elections they withdraw from or elections they lose.

I didn't make the Republican accusation ... that was someone else.

That's fine but ... why isn't this info posted on your website? One would think you would post those losses if no one else does.

I had it on the site for a while but removed it to make room for more recent events. I could put it back.

I post information about union elections and organizing when I receive notification.

found this on http://www.stopunions.com on updates page:

05/14/04 - The professional nurses at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana voted against the CNA today. There were 342 total votes (83%), 180 NO votes, 152 YES votes, 9 contested votes, and 1 voided vote.

05/12/04 - Congratulations to the nurses at Community Hospital of Los Gatos for making a great decision and being heard!! Yesterday, Los Gatos nurses had their CNA election and they used that opportunity to send a loud message, unions do not belong in healthcare. The final vote tally was 106 NO votes to 80 YES votes with 90% of the eligible nurses voting. That turn-out is something to be very proud of and another example of how important each and every vote is. We hope WMCSA will be sending a similar message this Friday.
