New ATI TEAS exam allows calculator

Published

I am taking the TEAS V exam this month. Let it be known, I am not great at mental math. I have a A average in all of my math lectures in school due to the fact that they allow calculators. So, when I learned that the TEAS V exam does not allow a calculator, I became disheartened. I have been studying for the Math section every day since I learned that. Now, to my dismay, I learn (via the ATI TEAS website) that there is a new version of the TEAS arriving August 31, 2016 which will allow a calculator. I am not going to lie, this really angers me. I have been studying so hard for this exam and have paid a lot of money so I can get a decent grade. Then they decide to allow a calculator after my exam date. To anyone else who is not a good standardized test taker and who needs every trick up their sleeve to earn a decent grade on one, you can sympathize.

I am just one person out of many, trying to get into nursing school, but this really grinds my gears. Timing is everything, I guess, and I chose my time to take the TEAS exam, poorly. Wish I would have known they were updating the exam to include the use of calculators before I spent a large exam fee on the TEAS-V.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the new test. For all you know, the newer test may be more complex. I'm imagining more algebra and word problems. I guess we will hear more about it in the future. I did excellent in math and science; however, I'm curious to know if they will reign in science. It's a bit all over the place with a smaller emphasis on anatomy/physiology. My rough spot was reading comprehension, so I'd like to know how that section may or may not change. We will see!

hi where did you get the information about new version of teas test? and will it be teas VI now? or same (teas V)?

I've struggled my whole life with mental math, even basic division and multiplication . It wasn't until a college remedial math professor showed me some tricks that I started to get confident with math. I'm by no means a rockstar, but mental math is much easier now.

Don't blame the TEAS for changing their rules. Instead, learn how to do basic calculations in your head. The only way you learn math is through practice. There are no shortcuts to that.

Don't rely on a calculator to get you through, there will be times where you won't have one,

Hey all, I took the TEAS V last week. I followed the advice I received on here, memorized my multiplication tables and conversions. Feeling more optimistic about my math skills after the TEAS. I scored an 85% on the math portion so, this makes me wonder if the math portion of the new TEAS will be harder due to the allowance of a calculator. Hope this helped and good luck to everyone!

congratulations, thats a great score!

I heard of the new TEAS in one of the schools I'm applying for. They will not take TEAS V scores anymore, only new version of the TEAS. Awaiting on new information for the TEAS. I have been trying to research it, but no luck yet on finding anything online. T

I am one of the unfortunate ones who recently (in Feb) took the TEAS V for the LPN program, but recently decided to go for an RN program. Well, now I need to take the new version. UGH! I did well the first time, but will still need to totally re-study, as my score is the biggest weight of my acceptance or not. I know there will be some tweaks, and that's what scares me. There was a lot of great info out there for the TEAS V, and I hope it can't be THAT different, but I like others have said, I wonder now with the use of a calculator if it will be even more difficult. I know they tweaked the number of questions and times in certain sections a bit.

It is super frustrating that you can use a calculator on the new test...but it really isn't going to help that much on the new test. They designed it so that it's still as difficult, calculator or not. The new version of the test won't have as many questions that rely on mental math, where a calculator would be super handy. On top of that, it will have questions about how to set up complicated math problems--and then you don't actually have to solve them. Instead, have to select the proper way of setting up the problem.

I know it stinks to find out you can use a calculator, but please take heart: the new test is totally different...and the TEAS isn't that nice. :)

UUUUggggh, that sounds awful, katetheteacher! It's not even the use of the calculator allowed now, it's just a new version period, and the unknown. There was so much great info out there on the TEAS V, and now it's like starting all over. I will need to take the test no later than Nov (hoping for Oct), so it will still be pretty new, though I hope by then there will be SOMETHING more out there. It looks like with the breakdown now, that there will be less time per question alloted as well. I also heard that it will be more A&P heavy, vs. earth sciences ( I heard this from the director of nursing at my LPN program before I decided to go for RN), but who knows. May I ask where you got your info? Complicated word/math problems sound awful. Sigh. :/ Thanks for your post!

Hi, fischek, CNA. I hear you! There's so much information about the TEAS V, but the new test is a little bit of a mystery, and that's kind of scary. You are completely correct that the new test will be A+P heavy. On the new test, A+P is about 2/3 of the science section and is 21 percent of the test overall (it was only 7 percent of the last test). The timing of the sections has also changed a bit, but you're still getting about the same amount of time per question in each section. Overall, the test is 209 minutes. The tightest section is English--you'll have a minute per question. Math and reading seem to be the hardest sections to finish, though, based on what I've heard from students who took the TEAS V. Of course you can ask where I get my info. :) Love it when someone checks out the source instead of trusting blindly! I teach a TEAS V prep course, so that means I spend way more time thinking about the TEAS than is healthy, ha. For the new test, I have the new official manual and attended webinars hosted by the ATI for college staff. I also have my own spreadsheets where I reverse engineer the material so that I can teach it in class---like I said, I spend way more time thinking about the test than is recommended--but I don't work for the ATI or anything like that. Aiming for October or November sounds like a great plan. You are thinking ahead and researching your options. I wish you a ton of luck studying!! You can do it!! :)
