New ATI TEAS exam allows calculator

Published

I am taking the TEAS V exam this month. Let it be known, I am not great at mental math. I have a A average in all of my math lectures in school due to the fact that they allow calculators. So, when I learned that the TEAS V exam does not allow a calculator, I became disheartened. I have been studying for the Math section every day since I learned that. Now, to my dismay, I learn (via the ATI TEAS website) that there is a new version of the TEAS arriving August 31, 2016 which will allow a calculator. I am not going to lie, this really angers me. I have been studying so hard for this exam and have paid a lot of money so I can get a decent grade. Then they decide to allow a calculator after my exam date. To anyone else who is not a good standardized test taker and who needs every trick up their sleeve to earn a decent grade on one, you can sympathize.

I am just one person out of many, trying to get into nursing school, but this really grinds my gears. Timing is everything, I guess, and I chose my time to take the TEAS exam, poorly. Wish I would have known they were updating the exam to include the use of calculators before I spent a large exam fee on the TEAS-V.

I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should take the TEAS V or the TEAS VI. I don't quite feel confident in my Science but I seem to be passing the other 3 sections with scores of 80%-90+% when I'm taking practice versions online (not the at practice exams). How heavily weighted are the sections of the current TEAS V? How might a really low score on the science section influence my overall percentage score? The school I am applying to only looks at the overall score, and requires a minimum of 58.7 to be considered. The whole unknown of the next version...I don't know if my school will shift the acceptance score to reflect the new exam....hmm what to do?

I read a couple of reviews from Amazon concerning the new study guide and aperently the teas v study guide is better. They also mentioned how the info on the new guide is exactly the same. I wonder if the test is the same?? :writing:

I actually have both, and I would disagree with this. Yes, the version V guide is way better, but there is definitely a difference between the two, as I think there will be on the test (I took the teas V already, but switched schools/programs so now I need to take the new version, ugh). Honestly, I think it will be harder. The math section for sure is much more multi-step heavy and word problems...oh yeah, and geometry. I feel much more nervous about this version. I emailed ATI about how awful the new study guide is (it is FULL of errors) and they are going to release an edited version, but it still lacks a lot of content compared to the previous version.

what ive heard is they took off all the math questions that are not necessary for Nursing. and they added more of calculations. that's from the counselor I talked to last week. yeap its more of thinking and calculations that's why they will let us use calculator.

its ok if you have been studying on teas v. most of the questions are still similar I guess. if you check they added more time and more question on each section. so just study study study is what we need. good luck to us....

I began studying for the TEAS at the end of last year, so I was studying for the TEAS 5. I didn't realize they were changing the exam until a few months ago. So since I'm applying to nursing school next year, I had to go out and buy the new review manual for the TEAS 6. I was pretty angry. But I was even more angry when I noticed how many errors were in the book. A few days ago I got an email from Barnes & Noble telling me that they're going to discontinue selling the book since the publisher made so many errors. Ugh I just want to finish studying for this exam already. I wonder if the McGraw Hill book will work.

First good luck in your future testing and career! I'm scheduled to take the teas for the first time jan 11th. I have been studying a lot the ati manual version 6. I took a practice test today and made a 77 over all. Was disappointed but I'm hard on myself. The science was a bad word lol. My reading was an 86. Math 82. Science 76. And English 67. Thing is I only missed 7 ish on the English. And several were careless mistakes. Also on the math I didn't use a calculator but for one prob but that was due to being tired of the math part and it was a prob adding a handful of numbers. I wouldn't stress being able to use a calculator really. I am great with numbers and figuring things out in my head. But once they include letters into the problem my brain gives me the finger so I am hopeful that won't be a big portion of the test.
