Neighborhood for a Nurse

Published

Hi! If I were to work at UPMC Presbyterian, what neighborhood would you recommend that's reasonable to live in on an RN's salary? Are Squirrel Hill and Shadyside close enough and affordable?

I'll be looking for 1 bedrooms - and of course I'm wanting to live somewhere safe!

Thanks!

Single, do you have kids?

The above are good choices for no kids.

Yes, it'll just be me - no kids!

Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are nice neighborhoods and close to Presby, but expect to pay a pretty penny for rent in those neighborhoods (at least $550 month/one bedroom). I personally prefer Bloomfield and Friendship, just a few blocks from Shadyside, but still very safe, and you get more apartment for your money.

I agree with Christine's assessment of the rent situation in the east end. My daughter works at UPMC Western Psych and lives in Shadyside. Very nice neighborhood, sleepy, quiet, safe as any place in Pittsburgh, but pricey. Parking is a pain in the butt as well. She only moves her car to leave the city, bus, walk, or bike the rest of the time. She has looked in Bloomfield and Friendship, but absolutely loves Shadyside and Squirrel Hill and hopes to buy herself a home there some day.

Thank you for your responses, I'll be in Pittsburgh today to check those neighborhoods out!
