Negative Threads

Nurses General Nursing

Is it just me or does this board seem really negative? I belong to other forums that deal with working out, cars, and mountain biking and there are hardly ever any "rant" threads, maybe 5% at most. Here, it's like the opposite. Do people come here in the general discussion just to rant?

This is a supportive site that people in the healthcare field can come and be honest about how they feel and the hardships they face and struggle with . Everybody has a right to there opinion and what they post here knowing that they will face many comments of support and or criticism.

Honestly, what do all of the vent threads usually come down to? People are upset about workplace issues that ultimately impact patient safety, whether it be staffing, unrealistic expectations of management, or hostile workplace environments. And I don't mind if people outside of the field come on here and see that...Lord knows that all of the constructive criticisms that we do at our workplaces help little if at all, maybe if we do get some laypeople decrying the conditions that we work in we'll get a change.

And I also think that you'll find, in the majority of "vent" threads, that people come on and give great "been there, dealt with that" advice. All I want, and I assume that most are with me on this, when I vent is validation and the offering of whatever wisdom others have to offer. Not necessarily both from the same poster, mind you...some can only offer validation and hopefully follow along with the postings to glean what wisdom they can from others with more experience with situations, which they can then (hopefully) put to use in their own practice.

Sometimes people have a need to express themselves, positive or negative. I find on this site that we as nurses need a lot of support at times and we need to help each other problem solve. We can offer advice and suggestions. We can gripe and just express anger. If one feels uncomfortable reading a negative comment, then go on to something else. Nursing is a stressful career and people have to have a way to express what they are not able to express in their work place.

Negative threads are great, we help each other by offering our ears (or eyes by reading) then responding. It isn't always what the poster wants to hear, and we may not agree with each other....BUT I really think we get a good overview of a combination of feelings, ideas from all walks of nursing and other areas of the country.

We may have the same problem and through allnurses we can share, vent, offer solutions, say Get over it, or whatever else!

I have to laugh because boy, oh boy, we have had some doozy threads, haven't we? I wholeheartedly agree with you...I try to learn from someone else's dilemma and I sort of store things in my head for a later date. I am surprized at how many threads I remember and have diverted me from some serious trouble!

I feel that all and all, we sort of feel like family and feel comfortable enough to actually share our frustrations, triumphs and joys.

Who the heck would rant about mountain biking??

The person who biked head into an oversized pine tree or an boulder. Ouch

Nursing is hard, often frustrating and sometimes thankless work. Instead of taking this out on our patients, families and coworkers, we often come here to vent. It's perfectly appropriate. For your enjoyment, check out the "why I love nursing" thread for positive words and encouragement.
