Needing information about CLEP

Published

Hi. I've been reading alot about the CLEP and DANTES and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to find out about this. Can you use these for some of your required classes such as psychology and sociology and possibly more? Just wondering, I have a baby and its hard to be able to actually go to campus. I just don't feel comfortable yet leaving her with someone and my husband is gone 6 days a week. Anyone who could give me any info I would appreciate it.. Thanks.. :)

I took the Psychology CLEP. The college board website had a practice test for the subject and a study guide that you could buy for I think about $10. I used the practice questions as an outline for what material to study. Also, the study guide gave a breakdown of what percentage of the test would be on particular topics - 10% history of psych, 15% on methods of testing, etc. I studied a little bit each day for about two weeks and had no problem passing the test.

What type of program are you looking for? I am an LVN working for RN and have clepped out of psch and sociology and these are good for whichever type of program you go through. I am doing the distance learning with Excelsior college

Hi. I am getting ready to go to college in the fall at Marian College in Indianapolis Indiana. I am going for my associates degree in nursing. I am just starting out and I am really nervous about everything. I have been looking at the colleges website and they offer clep tests and I know which ones I can take and get credit for.. (Psychology, Sociology, English, College Algebra) I'm just starting out and this will be the first time I am going to college. I'm 26 years old and a new mom and I've decided that I am finally ready to go to college. When I graduated from college I didn't know what I wanted to do so, I just decided to wait until I was sure. Also, at the time I didn't feel like I was ready to go to college yet. I think I am looking at atleast one year to a year and a half at pre-reqs and I thought if I did the clep tests that might make it shorter for me and help me too. Oh well, just trying to make it!! :)

I think you're smart for looking into CLEPs and DANTES. They save a lot of time and money.

I wish you the very best of luck!!! :)

Is this the program that has many of it's classes online with clinicals offered locally?

It is the LPN to RN BSN offered by Indiana State University. I had too many credits to waste for a 2 year associates degree which is why I chose this one. I have Phase II which will consist of on line classes and have to do my precept locally with an approved professional. Then I am done and on to the NCLEX_RN.

I have used college network for all my work...mainly because I prefer it to all others. Basically, what programs works for you..works for you. Others use different programs...and I find no fault with most of them..However..it is just college network works best for me. I find their guides to best help me prepare plus with my own research and stuff..I find that I have been prepared for all my exams well..I have passed the Dantes, Clep, and Excelsior exams with As and Bs. You should explore your options and take it from there. The exams I have taken are cheap...only the excelsior ones are expensive..The guides can get expensive but ebay and other online book sales will have them. Usually it does not matter if they are not current for the year...The material basically remains the same in my opinion. Keep in mind that some programs will only take an A or B on upper level classes...no Cs. Always check before you take an exam or when you are exploring your options.

Good luck with whatever you decide and let me know how you are doing.

I am glad to hear from someone who is doing this program. I have a gentleman coming to the house today to explain the program. I like that you obtain a bachelors as that is my ultimate goal vs. an adn. I am supposed to start the traditional adn program this September but will see how this program works.

I have taken the Psychology, Sociology, Biology, Analysis of Literature Clep exams. But have taken the Excelsior and Dantes also.

Clep is not easy -and you have 90 minutes for most exams.

There is no one text or guide that will fully prepare you for the exam. I do think you have to take some time, read, research, and study to do well on them. I did a lot of quizzes and test online from colleges and such that were free to test my knowledge as I studied which worked well for me. All are multiple choice and one answer can be discarded right away. There are generally I have found to be 2 correct answers but one is the better choice. They do require thorough reading before answering as when I have reviewed some of my answers I realized I had misunderstood and marked the wrong answer. I was glad you can review your answers before ending the test if you have time left on the clock! Good luck to you..

Do you have to go through the college network or can you go through ISU without them and if you do it without TCN the how do you know what to order online?

Do you have to go through the college network or can you go through ISU without them and if you do it without TCN the how do you know what to order online?

If you are talking about the ISU program, the study modules for the test out exams are produced by The College Network. They can be bought used from other students. However, many people do not even bother with the study modules at all. They use standard texts and study resources for the content area. Example, if the topic is pediatric nursing, then buy or borrow a standard peds textbook and peds NCLEX review books and use these to study from.

Really, so all I would have to do is register with ISU and then do the online portion of ISU? Do I have to find a preceptor for clinical or how does that work? Would love to get more info because I am really considering doing this option. Can I take the tests at my own pace? Thank you for responding so quickly. Also, I have so many nursing textbooks its rediculous so finding info shouldn't be a problem. As a rough average with not going through the college network, How much is the LVN to BSN? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks in advance!!:D
