Need TEAS help please.

Nursing Students General Students

I am in my Introduction to Nursing class (12 week summer session) and our teacher told us yesterday that we are taking the TEAS Monday..I don't have time to order a study book or anything, and I need to score well because our TEAS scores are factored in to determine who gets in to clinicals.

I am not worried about the English or Reading, but could you guys please tell me what types of Math and Science problems I am most likely to encounter? I haven't had a Math class in two years LOL. I am thinking about getting some High School level Math books to study from..So if anyone can break down to me what to expect I would GREATLY appreciate your kindness.

the test covers four general areas: math, reading, english and science. you can get online resources without having to buy any books. i've provided you with links.

  • math covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion
    • i can give you a website where you can do some practice of math problems and get information on how to solve the problems step-by-step. i would recommend that you choose a book of pre-algebra level math on the site since those are the math skills the teas test covers. i usually suggest the author, martin-gay who has written a number of algebra textbooks.
    • http://www.interactmath.com/ - follow the instructions to download the one or two drivers necessary to use the software on the site. the site is free to use and is a student companion resource to the math textbooks published by this company. i used this program extensively to practice working math problems when i took intermediate algebra and trig.

[*]reading covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions

[*]english covers knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words and spelling

[*]science covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles and general science

i noticed in double checking these links that the home page of the new york oswego city school district regents exam prep center website (http://www.regentsprep.org/regents.cfm) has gotten quite extensive. this website is to prepare students to take the high school equivalency exams. it is all online and free. you will find links there to complete reviews of information contained in high school coursework for math, algebra, chemistry, earth science and physics. if you scroll down this page of links on a very different website (http://www.ndt-ed.org/sitenav/table%20of%20contents.htm) you will find basic information on core math and science principles to help you.

good luck with your test on monday!

Thank you so much for taking the time to compile all of this. It is great and exactly what I needed. I had found a site for standardized test help and the TEAS was one of the categories, but it had EVERY type of math. Narrowing it down to Pre-Algebra makes this so much easier. Thanks again!

Hello the Math section was the hardest for me as well, and I have heard that from a lot of people. It is pretty basic but there isn't a lot of time. Only spend at most 2-3 minutes per problem. If you can backsolve do it, and try to solve the minimum. Let say that you have four answers 32.52, 38.51, 48.53, and 65.00 and you do some mutiplication and have to add up your answers and you get an answer that ends in 3. Don't waste time with the rest of the calculation because there is only one answer that ends in 3. I found it to be a lot of multiplication and addition and very little geometry. There was some ratios that you set up as a proportions and cross multiply, and I remember there was at least one question that asked us how many cups/quarts/gallons so it would be a good idea to know those conversions. I also found that sometimes you could use logic to figure out the answer and not spend a lot of time actually doing calculations. If you are stuck move on but go back at the end and put an answer hopefully you can make an educated guess. Do not leave any answers blank, and make sure you are on the right number on your answer sheet. Best of luck to you. I got in the 99th percentile the second time I took it. The first time I was in the 90th but I realized that I spent way too much time during the math section, and I tried to do the calculations and then do them again to make sure I got the correct answer and you just do not have time for that. The second time I approached it differently and in the math improved my score significantly.

i wouldn't stress too much about the exam. however, the math section was the most difficult for me. just review algebra word problems and proportions. for science, they asked quite a few questions on physics like the different types of forces acting simultaneously on an object. they asked a few on the direction of bloodflow through the heart. good luck!!!

From taking the TEAS, know fractions, how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them, even mixed numbers.

Show ratios; Dimentional Analysis.

Also do a "search" for TEAS, on this message board, there are words that you have to check for spelling for that are commonly in error on the test, and there are HUGE consistencies.

I would highly recommend, going to the ATI website and taking one of their mock exams. The key to the TEAS, is that you read a question, and think you know what it's asking for, and then realize later that you missed a detail on it and it caused you to get the question wrong.

The mock TEAS will show you how this works.

The exam is not difficult, so don't worry, just take your time, read every question twice, do NOT try to rush through it, or enough minor mistakes will sink you.

The science...good luck with that one...they pull these questions out at random and they are very specific and have nothing to do with nursing or most science classes for that matter.

Thanks you all so very much for this valuable information. I have to take the TEAS in August. I have a quesion, maybe I missed something. What is the ATI website? Thanks for your response.

hi..

Go to Math.com.... this is a great site to help you pass the test. In fact, the book did not help me much at all. The math is what you really need to focus on. The science wasn't too bad. Some reasoning involved. The english was pretty simple. Not too many vocab words.

Good luck

ati is the company that writes the teas text. they sell a number of products to help you study for the teas as well as other tests they write that are nursing related at their online store. here is the ati website:

Hopefully you school has told you what areas on the TEAS you will be tested on. My school chose not to include science. We did just math, reading comprehension and writing/grammar.

I focused so hard on my math that the time got away from me and I didn't get to complete it. Which greatly affected my math score. My reading and grammar scores were very high. I had also had an A- in math on my transcript. My school looked at the whole picture, and took into account factors such as nervousness, previous performances and the like.

I'm sure you will do quite well. Hopefully your school will look at the whole person even if your score is not quite as high as you would like.

I just wanted to say thanks again. I feel like I did really well on the TEAS. You guys all gave me some great advice.

I am trying to gain entrance to a PN course, I have taken the COMPASS exam and passed it with ease but I was informed that I have to take the TEAS exam (science portion) to gain entrance into the course. I was only given a week to study and the week has dwindled down to only a few days. I have tried to refresh in several areas of science but I feel ill-prepared. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
