i need some support with an injury

So i work in a CVICU, i injured my back moving a patient in early august and have been out of work since. i am doing a light duty job part time in the evenings and i miss patient care and the challenge of ICU so much but that's not the issue.

i am still having numbness in my hand and restriction of range of motion in my neck. i am in PT 2x week and it is better immediately after my PT, but always back to the same the day after. i had an EMG today and the neurologist told me that it looks like a pinched nerve in my neck and that i will probably have an MRI. i see my occupational health MD on tues. and we discussed the possibility of cortisone injections already.

i am just scared. i want to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation. i miss my life! i just want things to be back to normal already!

(even though they wanted me to come in in a wheelchair)
You know, we've all joked about management being cold-hearted and all, and I've even experienced it to a degree (expected to work the night I was CO poisoned)--- but come on. This takes the cake :stone

I was laying on the ER stretcher with a non-rebreather going when my boss came in and told me she felt I should work that shift. I just gave her the look, and she backed off :lol2:

Thanks, I still can't believe it myself, but it's true. The facility manager said that I should be willing to come in 1 month post-op IM Nailing, because "it depends on what you would be doing" (they wanted me to supervise a student nurse on nights and weekends). It has been a battle with them since, as they also tried to prevent me from getting Unemployment insurance (they have no STD).

This is a little off subject, but a few years ago it was discovered during a routine colonoscopy (family hx.) that I had a cancerous polyp. The doc scheduled a colon resection 48 hrs. later. My NM came to me and asked if I could put it off "for a few months". It was Summer and she had too many people taking vacation!!!! (I'm fine now--caught it early enough-no chemo). I could not believe my ears!! The doc was furious!

I'm so glad you're ok (no thanks to that idiot of a manager). My manager refused to allow me time off after I was hospitalized for a bowel perf. My GI and primary doc wanted to do a scope and possible resection; she told me I wasn't "allowed" to schedule any medical procedures because I'd missed time for surgery earlier in the year. (cancer too, btw... the perf was a complication of the surgery and treatment) Both docs were furious. At the time, I could not afford to lose (or leave) my job, so I begged them to just let it go. That was one of many complaints about this manager I reported to HR when I quit. And from what I was told, one of the reasons they used to can her ass.

It's just amazing how some nurses "care" for each other. You know..."got to get that stuff done!" Damn! I'm so glad you're OK too, Emmanuel. That may be why we experienced nurses seem to be so negative at times. We've seen a lot of crap and have often been the recipient of it. How in the world did you let a bowel perf. go????

No... sorry that wasn't clear. I was supposed to have these procedures as a follow-up to my hospitalization once the perf had healed enough to reduce the risk somewhat (about 6 weeks later).

I can't say that it makes me feel better to know it has happened to others. Just makes me scared to work as a nurse. I find it so ironic that in a profession where we are supposed to be educating and supporting patients with their illnesses, we are expected to ignore our own....

Sorry, but I'm not that much of a martyr...
