Hello there,

My name is Irene, this is my first time here! I find this website to be amazing. I wish I wouldve known about it before:o.

Well at the current moment, I am a Junior in college trying to get into Nursing school. Soon I will be taking my pre-entrance exam god willing. However, I have a question for you guys. My friend mentioned to me about the EMT program and I love the idea.I want to know if it would be a good idea to do the EMT program for the meantime being that it takes a whole semester which i think most likely il be off school since they are not offering the class I need for this spring semester coming up. My plan was to get into EMT for the meantime, by February I'll probably have taken the exam and i would be waiting for the results. I mean i think the EMT program will be great use of my time and it will give me a great idea of how it is to work in the medical field. Please HELP!!!! :uhoh3:

It's a great idea. I believe the EMT training will be invaluable.

BTW, my EMT training was 6 weeks (8 hrs a day and PT after class ;))

That is kind of strange how some schools or programs have a waiting list? Like i said, we don't have one, everyone has to reapply every year. 450 or so applicants and they only accept 100 of them.

If you are looking in to LPN, be advised that if you are trying to get financial assistance, and depending on where you are going, you will have to pay out of pocket.

But only one semester for EMT? Really? it takes at least a year, if not longer, here. But I know the students get A LOT of hands on training.

EMT-Basic should only take about a semester. The Paramedic programs are usually intensive 1-2 year program.

I highly recommend EMT training. I was an EMT-B, then an EMT-Cardiac Technician, then a LPN then a RN. The progression has been wonderful-I have utilized all my experiences and, I feel, they have made me a better nurse. Good luck to you.

One thing that is important to remember is that thinking like an EMT and thinking like an RN are two totally different kettles of fish....

I took the EMT course while I was on my 4-year waiting list. I did it just for the knowledge gained and it was a great experience.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

In my humble opinion no education is ever wasted as the saying goes..so...if you gave the time, go for the EMT, certifications of any medical kind will most likely assist you in the job market, school, life - good luck

I am an EMT and found that the knowledge gained in practice was helpful during nursing school for two reasons: I already could recognize many signs and symptoms of emergent situations and I was already comfortable with patient contact. But that was from being a volunteer EMT for 5 years before starting nursing school. Just getting your EMT certificate without using it wouldn't mean much. So join your local fire company or Ambulance corps, they will likely pay for the EMT program for you. Also - I think that my EMT status helped my resume a great deal when I started looking for a job.

I do not understand how becoming an EMT will get you closer to your nursing goal. However, if you want to earn money while you go to nursing school, that is a good choice. As for EMT training helping you with nursing, not really too much in common. The EMT focus differs from nursing focus. But any skill you learn would not be wasted.
