Need NYC Sandy situation update, please!

Published

Hey, anyone know if Sloane-Kettering -- 53rd Street--is functioning? Have personal / family issues that require us to be there tomorrow--VERY important appointment for relative's new dx CA case-- and at this point don't know even HOW to get there (bridges/trains/subways closed). Am coming from about 90 miles upstate.

Anyone know when the major forms of travel will be open....tomorrow...?

Can anyone shed some light?

Have been all over the MTA site, PAuth site, etc, and no indications as to when GW Bridge will be open.....does anyone know anything?!

MSK is "fine" as far as one knows, probably quite chaotic between the storm and they also took in a number of transfers from NYU-Langone due to their power failure.

You can read updates for patient information from the hospital's website here: Emergency Information: Information for Patients and Families | Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

I'd wait and contact the hospital before making any plans to come into Mahnattan tomorrow.

Just telephoned over to MSK and was told that the 53rd location was closed today but everything at both the main hospital and that campus (53rd street) was "on" for tomorrow. The operator suggested telephoning back later on today to see if things change. She also suggested if one has an appointment scheduled for tomorrow and is not in Manhattan and or cannot get there to contact for reschedule information.

DGTG: THANK you! So far, best I've found online on the transit situation is "it'll be open at some point". I'm going to the link now....

George Washington Bridge, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing are closed until further notice. However the NJ Turnpike and Lincoln Tunnel have reopened.

Good to know. We'd have to get over GW bridge....just realized I don't know if Tappan Zee is open. We'd have to get over that one first.

Have kept family informed of as much as I can find--which, as you know, is "we'll see".

Nerves are frayed as we very much need scans from our local radiology facility before going down tomorrow and the facility is closed. Everything up here that isn't "essential" has been closed. Hell, reason I'm home dealing with this is because MY outpatient facility is closed.

Meantime, we're fighting the clock on a CA brain tumor, HAVE to get FIL to the neurosurgeon's appointment tomorrow, and if feels like we're in a Movie of the Week.

To be fair the subway system experienced damage worse than anyone ever imagined. Many tunnels are flooded and worse with salt water, so it's going to be awhile before damage can be checked out. Of course nothing can be done until the water is pumped out of the system.

If you telephone MSK and get a fast busy signal, hang up and try again, and again if need be. Circuts are jammed around that area and one assumes allot of it has to do with the patient transfers from NYU-Langone to New York Hospital and MSK. Families are waking up this morning to find out about that problem and now are probably trying to track down their loved ones.

Oh, understood. Not being critical at all! Just trying to see if there's a more recent update than the one's I've found, and....nada.

I'm holding off on the phone calls to MSK (or the 53rd St facility) until we know that we can even GET there. If MSK is open but we can only get there by carrier pigeon, well....you get the idea. Plus, the SCANS we need are locked in the radiology facility at this point. IF it's open tomorrow--and I'm betting it will be--we still have to get the info there enough time before the appointment, etc etc.

So.....jumping between computer tabs!

Thank you so much for help....someone being there having a clue is a lifesaver.

Best to wait until around 430PM and contact MSH again to see if things are certainly going to be open tomorrow. You might want to also see if they are rescheduling for later in the week when some of this mess clears up.

Of course the more pricey option is trying to get in the night before and staying at the Marriot Couryard hotel around the corner.

Girl no problem! Am sending you hugs and well wishes. Been there and done that with two family members so know a little bit about it! :)

Pricey option isn't even an option, as the appointment is tomorrow and we can't get near there today. Or maybe not even tomorrow :(

Dh is trying to fax out some of the info that we DO have that they'll need, but lines are jammed....shocker there, huh?

Just taking this a piece at a time. Thank you for the support! :)

Know anything about the Third Ave bridge.....think it's called Willis bridge? SIL tells me there's also a small one, hardly ever closes, north of GW bridge...near Columbia? We can go down 87 and cross it and then we can get to MSK!
