Need a nursing school which does not require prerquisites for admission

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am a 1st year Graduate student studying IT and is now considering changing fields.I have an Undergraduate degree in IT with Psychology. I want to change my career focus to Nursing I have always loved and cared for people especially when in need of help. It has taken me a while to identify my true career path- Nursing. I want to be a Nurse. I desire to be a Nurse. I believe its a right choice.

I want to start with the Accelerated (BSN) program. I have contacted some schools but they all need me to take a couple of prerequisites before i can be admitted. These prerequisites i believe will take me a while. I want to start this Fall, 2008.

Does anyone know a school who will be ready to admit me with a waiver of these prerequites. I have some covered at my undergraduate level though. I graduated with a BA in IT with Psychology.I had a good GPA. I will try and take some this summer but will not be able to complete all prerequisites this summer.

I will be interested in schools located in PA, VA, GA, MA, SC & NC.

I have to agree with the posters above...also, even if there were, you would really be doing yourself a major disservice if you did go into a nursing program without at least A&P and microbiology. There are many nursing students that have taken these courses that are having difficulty in class.

I know it may not feel it, but it does go fast. Short cuts usually wind up taking longer than just going the regular route.

Because nursing school is highly competitive to get into, those students that are more prepared (i.e. having requirements and grades) will have a greater advantage, and even still might have to wait to get into a program. Your degree while an achievement, may not really amount to too much (of course, this depends on the school).

Of all of the students that failed 1st semester nursing at our school...every single one of them were taking A&P along with 1st year nursing and Pharmacology....it's a co-req and not a pre-req at our school.

Specializes in Triage, MedSurg, MomBaby, Peds, HH.

You may be interested in some of the newer Direct Entry MSN programs that are specifically designed for those with a non-nursing undergraduate degree:

These programs are generally three years long but include your prereq's. By the end of the first year, you are required to take the NCLEX. By the end of the third year, you have your MSN.

Yale's program, for example, builds an anatomy course right into the MSN curriculum but the traditional prerequisites are NOT required, only suggested.

All you need is your Bachelor's and GRE scores.
