Need a new start! Thinking of relocating

I am really thinking about moving OUT OF NY to either VA or TX. I've never been to TX except for when I am going to Acapulco. So I was thinking that the Houston area would be a nice choice for me. I have a 10yr old son so school systems are very important as well as location. I'm not a RN yet, so my question is what type of LPN jobs are available in Tx? I am willing to commute if the pay is better in one city vs the one I end up residing in. My experience include Med/Surg in a hospital, Clinics(Medicine and OB/GYN) and Correctional nursing. Thanks to all those who reply.

HISD has a pretty bad reputation but I'm sure there are exceptions in the schools.

I don't really know of any hospitals that hire LVN's.

Starbucksnurse,

Previous poster is correct, LVN jobs in hospitals are pretty scarce right now. Probably because so many RNs have come back into the workplace due to the economic situation.

That being said, you should really try to relocate fairly close to the area where you will be working. Houston is bigger than cities you are used to - with virtually no public transportation. Commuting is a pretty daunting prospect, even for us natives. It's just about as gruesome as LA. You really don't want to put yourself through that!

You may want to avoid the major metropolitan areas (Houston, Dallas-FT.Worth, Austin, San Antonio) and look at smaller cities in TX where LVNs have better job prospects. Be advised that the geography & climate varies widely - be sure you are prepared for those differences. West Texas, East Texas, Gulf Coast, Panhandle -- all very different environments.

I am relocating to Texas from Virginia. I will be working at Christus St. Elizabeth hospital. I really look forward to that!

The job market in VA is not really good right now, although that is not the reason I wanted to relocate. As I started job hunting a few weeks ago (I just finished my finals yesterday and my convocation is tomorrow), I was looking at Texas. I told myself that if I could not get a job in Texas, I would look locally in Southeast Virginia-- because I thought it would be much easier to get a job locally and that would be my bottom line. However, as graduation nears, not many of my classmates have found job here whereas I was offered the job at Christus St Elizabeth two weeks ago.

So, yes, try some not-so-major cities at TX and maybe you can find a great job! Good luck!
