Need Information About Charlotte

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

I live in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area (was born and lived in S. FL almost my whole life) and I'm really looking into to moving to Charlotte, NC. My husband and I are renting and real estate is SO expensive here that I don't know if we'll ever own anything (3 bedroom starter homes in a decent area start at $350,000+). Is Charlotte nice and could I get a nice three bedroom house for around $150,000? Also my husband is Hispanic - do you think he will feel comfortable in Charlotte? We are used to a very multi-culteral atmosphere. thanks for any advice!

Hey there. I am currently a student at Presby/Queens. Love it! Smart to have as many pre reqs out of the way. Get them done sooner than later! Any other questions? Faculty is great, very knowledgeable, and approachable.

Thanks so much for your reply. I was starting to think no one went to that school! Well, as far as prereqs.. I only need 2. The rest of mine transferred (Thank God for that). All I know is I am very excited. Are they helpful in career planning at all? Do they try to put you toward assignments that you are most interested in? How does that work? My biggest interest is the ICU and I am sure they are going to try and talk me out of doing that my first year as a nurse but I do have a little medical background... I dunno

I have found that they are very helpful in gearing you to where you want to be. They will "encourage" you to be a CNA and to try to get a job doing tech work where you "want to get a RN job in the future". I never worked as a tech, b/c of family obligations, but it hasn't been a bad thing, thus far. I want to work in the ED, which can be tough, but I have made the right connections and you can too. Let's put it this way, if you are "on your game" and apply yourself, they are eager to help you out! As far as ICU, I don't know if they hire new grads......if they are, the faculty will help you get there. If not, they will help you plot a course to get there as quickly as you can.

Hope that makes sense! Let me know if you need anything else!

It is a good program-I asked about the pre-reqs because as with any other nursing program, it will make your experience more successful.. I know Micro is a challenge there and the abnormal psych depends on the instructor in the pscyh department you get there..

I wasn't impressed with their RN-BSN program, but all of my classmates who were doing the "Presby" program seemed to enjoy it.. A lot of the instructors have been around the school or the area for a while which is nice!

I used to have Queens students on my psych unit to shadow and they were all very courteous/nice even when things got a little *crazy* that day, haha..

If you don't mind me asking, what didn't you like about the RN-BSN program? I know another girl who graduated with her ASN but went to another school to get her BSN. I was told that the Micro class would be a heavy load by one of the instructors, I guess I'm kinda banking that since I work in the lab I will have some help! I am crazy about Psychology so I am excited about that particular class.. I think I took every Psych available at my previous college with the exception of abnormal. The one thing I know I am going to HATE already is the traffic. I come from a little town (Salisbury) that you can drive to either side in about 15mins. I'll be coming from Huntersville and I have figured out that I can take West BLVD and it will bring me pretty close but I get lost in Charlotte in a minute. Then there's driving from Queens to Presby... I've figured out providence rd will take me there but it's all just a big mess!

Charlotte will make the person with the best sens of direction get lost-especially the area Queens is in, the Dilworth area. It's well known that the city was not built with longterm plans to become a large city so the roads are really sketchy and make no sense, don't worry, you just have to get lost enought times to know where not to go..

Do you take 77 South from Salisbury? There are no 'easy' ways from 77-

Woodlawn in the afternoon (from 3:30 on) is horrific so I wouldn't adivse that any other time than off rush hour times..

Tyvola can also be horrible but once you turn left on South Blvd. but you can avoid the Woodlawn traffic..

You can also turn left on Park Road (which is what I did) from Tyvola and Queens is right there.

Providence Road is an easy way to get there, but traffic can be bad as well so just plan ahead!

No big problems with the RN-BSN program, it's just 'newer' to the school and when I was there, some kinks still needed to be worked out..

Enjoy your time there!

Think my thread got moved.... anyways, thanks for all the info. I think the latest way I went was West to East blvd. It was ok but nothing great. I am actually living in Huntersville now so I get on 77 yes. I could hit Harris and go to 85 but I don't know if that would be any better. Well thanks again! GTG for now

Hope everyone's moves are going smoothly...if I can help let me know

I am currently a pediatric nurse and wanted to know information about it in general. What are the nurse patient ratios? How is the pay? How do you like working their overall? Any information will be gladly appreciated.

The new hospital is great so far, it is part of the Carolina healthcare system and the pa is the same as theirs. I work in the PACU and our ratio is 2:1 not sure what the floors are,

How do you like working there?
