Need some help: NYU spring 2012 application

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me or give me some advice on the application process. I am currently finishing up my pre reqs and this fall will be my last semester so I will be done by spring. I am not a 2nd degree student so do I apply as traditional transfer student for spring or do I wait until the following fall semester? I know the spring semester is the accelerated program for 2nd degree students and I don't have a bachelors degree already. Also do you recommend me apply as early as possible and sending my letters of rec, personal statement and transcripts all in one envelope and mail it myself? Sorry for the questions, I live in Florida and no one here is applying out of state, so I really get as much information as I can from this website.

Thank you

Hi Jimminey,

Why do you say that? I was accepted, but have heard a lot of mixed reviews about this program and am a bit concerned. Can you give an idea of what the program is like, especially compared to some direct entry programs (such as Columbia's ETP)?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Yes, could you please expand on your response? How exactly are you paying for the program/how much financial aid is available? NYU is definitely a HUGE chunk of change and I'm just deciding now whether it's actually worth it or not.

Save your money and apply to a nursing school in florida. By the time you're done at nyu, you'll be owing six figures for a nursing degree. Tuition and living expenses. It is a great school but not worth the financial burden...............

What is NYU's nursing tuition. According to this NYU > Office of the Bursar > Tuition/Fees > Fall and Spring > College of Nursing (Undergraduate) the nursing program is only 25k. And according to sites like USNEWS.com and Collegeboard.com tuition is 40k+. So what is the real deal?

Hi kitkats,

The program is $21K per semester in tuition and fees. Not including books, rent, expenses etc.

I'm in my second semester and I will be graduating in December. Overall it's pretty good and I'm very happy with it.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Kika

That's steep, did they at least give you a scholarship?I find it hard to even think about owing 30k a year.

NYU gives you a $2,500 scholarship every semester and then there are also many other scholarships you can apply for. The rest is all federal and personal loans. I know it's a lot of money and sometimes I get nervous thinking that when I'm done I will owe that much! But for me it was an investment for my future and I did not have the time and patience to wait for a CUNY program to become available.

At the end of the day is the program worth the money???? Meaning being accepted, short time length, quality of name, no waitlist, etc is what I want to know.

Hi everyone,

Good luck to everyone who may be applying to schools or are waiting to hear back. I've read countless threads about NYU and Downstate which each have their pros and cons. I've been admitted to both and am now trying to decide which would be the better school for me. If there are any grads or current students out there I would really appreciate your thoughts. I think it's hard to get a grasp on the pros and cons through threads because every student comes from a different background and their complaints may not be as much of an issue for someone else. I included a little about myself so hopefully you will be able to see where I'm coming from and how I should base my decision.

I am a product of upper middle class suburbia and went to a 4 year private undergrad school in Boston. I prefer studying by myself and don't mind self-teaching (but would like the support of teachers on occasion). Although I work hard on my own I would still like for faculty to answer emails and for the administration to be engaged and informative about industry opportunities. I am good at following instructions and haven't had any issues with administration from either schools (not to say people that have had issues can't follow instructions, I know some admins can be awful). In academics I am certainly not the top student but I have always done above average (b+/a-). If I don't do well I tend to believe it's because I didn't work hard enough, not because the program/professor/administration was bad.

Assuming that price is not an issue, is NYU a better program than Downstate? I am fortunate enough that I do not currently have any student loans so I feel if NYU would be better in the long run, it'll be worth it. I'm about 70% sure I would like to get my masters but things always change and who knows what will happen.

Do NYU grads have better job opportunities and connections? Or rather, will it be the top students of any school that will have first pick of where they want to work? Would a hospital looking at two recent grads who have the same grades and experience choose the NYU student over Downstate?

Sorry for the long post but ANY thoughts, feelings, or info would be greatly appreciated. My last thought: the majority of people in the program probably don't post their complaints or praises so can any of the past threads really be a factor in someone's decision?
