Nurses Job Hunt

Published

OK... so there are no words for how frustrated I am today. I want to scream into a pillow. Or something else generally "therapeutic"... but first some background-

I graduated my ADN program May 11, 2012. I have had a hell of a time just getting to graduation - ex-hubby asked for a divorce when I got home from the first day of nursing school, left me with two kids & no income so that our house was foreclosed on in my second semester. During my summer psych (third) semester I had to move into my parent's roach infested home because it was there or the homeless shelter - just to stay in Nursing school. Then, during my fourth semester the front tire on my car blew which then caused the vehicle to bottom out and dislodge the oil pan just enough to render the vehicle undriveable. Finally, during my final semester I have so far not been able to find a residency because I am "not competitive enough" as stated by the *large Dallas hospital* recruiter and many others. Honestly I have been through alot, there are other who may have been through more I guess, but the fact that I made it through all that with a better than 3.0 GPA and no previous medical experience should speak VOLUMES about my ability and my passion for the field. I should also add that I did that with no special accomodations for my situation, many of my instructors didn't even know what I was going through. Alas, all residencies in the DFW area are now full (with the exception of the *closest county hospital* - whom I desperatley would love to work with, but have not heard a single word from other than *this is the last email you will get unless you are selected as a candidate*) and I am left with nothing but the reassurance from others that it "gets better once you have RN behind your name."

I said I graduated May 11 right? It is now June 3 and I still have no Authorization to Test. The board you ask? NO! Two people in my Nursing class failed to apply for graduation, so it held up ALL of our Affidavits of Graduation at the college. Now test sites and dates are filling up and I may have to make a bank-breaking drive 4 hours away just to test NCLEX. I have made it through school without once screaming "It's not fair" but this one time, I think I am justified - why should 2 people hold up a class of over 100??? I don't know what to do I am so stressed and I only have a month or so of expenses put away to care for myself and my children - I am running out of options. I don't want to leave the field. I want to go higher, because Nursing seems like the only fit for me - BSN, then MSN/DNP in Midwifery and CNM!! But it seems as if nobody cares....... HR is an impenetrable wall. I just feel so discouraged, I try to keep a positive outlook, a smile on face even though I am crying inside. I just need some support, somewhere to turn before I break. I am so tired of the "it's not what you know, it's who you know culture" here in DFW.

Any ideas that could help me stand out? Maybe draw a recruiters attention and help me be more "competitive?" I am already a AWHONN member (won a free membership at a meeting, luckily) and am getting ready to take the Intro to Fetal Monitoring class - but I am not limiting myself to just WH/OB/L&D internships because what I need more right now is a way to feed my kids and get them out of my parents deplorable home, while I grow that and do my BSN (already enrolled)...

That's not a personal low point. Many others are in the same boat. RN jobs are very hard to come by. Many facilities want the CNA/PCT to stay. It takes a lot to train a person in a position and to have them the position once they graduate is understandable.

You will find something. Keep the faith and hang in there. You are not alone. Maybe start calling the nursing homes along with the hospitals weekly just to keep your name fresh. Wishing you a job and hugs.

Personal low-point - broke down crying on the phone today when I finally got a call from the HR department of the only hospital in the area with internships left "unfilled" - telling me that they had promised all their internships to internal candidates and I would not even get an interview unless one of them turned it down. What's worse is that I interviewed and almost got a position with this hospital's sister facility last July, but they decided not to hire me because I was "too close to graduating" to take the PCT position I interviewed for... I was also informed by the HR manager that I would not be hired as a PCT at any of this network's locations (the largest network in DFW) once I became a RN - so somehow getting my RN license just took more job options off the table for me???

This is life. One door closes another opens. "What does not kills me makes me stronger." - Freddy Nietzsche. Onward to another job. Take the hurt and turn it into strength. Go after the next job a little more vehemently. Don't worry about the largest hospital. It is their lost not yours. Always remember what Crazy Hamlet said, " Let Hercules himself do what he may. The Cat will mew and the dog shall have his day." Go get 'em Pit Bull

75 question NCLEX today and "the good popup" still drooling over the next 48 hours until Quick Results, but ohmigosh am I ever honestly relieved!! Chatted with a nurse recruiter last week who told me their GN positions were all being filled by internal candidates, but to call her Friday with my quick results just in case one of them turns it down/doesn't pass. I will update all on my NCLEX/License status Thursday evening/night

It's OFFICIAL!!! I'm a RN!!

A huge congratulations to you!!!!!!! :)

Congratulations! Keep your eyes open for positions in Skilled nursing facilities. I worked for a year in a SNF floor of a LTC and gained a ton of experience. The pay wasn't as good as hospital pay but I learned a ton about time management, communication and used a lot of my nursing skills like IVs, G-tubes, wound vacs, Foleys, etc. I really recommend that new grads start at a place like that - you learn a ton and there is a lot less competition than there is for hospital jobs.

Good luck and congrats again!

Interview with a hospice/continuous care staffing agency tomorrow. So far the other end of the spectrum from OB (my passion) but it's money and using my education. Wish me luck. Down to the last few dollars in the bank.

Jamie,

Hospice is wonderful. I have interactions with Community Hospice during my work and they are amazing.

Well, I took the job since I have no money, but this place honestly creeped me out. It's Continuous Care Hospice staffing and it is either home or inpatient, wherever they send me. 12 hour shifts, but no guarantee that there will be work. $20/hr as a contractor (1099) I honestly feel like I am risking my license, but I need to take care of my kids, so I guess a job is a job. I am so sad my career has to start somewhere that feels so shady...

Well continuous care hospice is my bread and butter. I would get out of this idea that new grads have that they are "risking" their license. If you think about it as far as patient outcomes go there is only one eventually one for cc. As long as you focus on patient comfort and pain management you'll be fine.

Are you working for an agency or for the company directly. If agency then yeah your agency might be shady but the companies you work for maybe nice.

The 1099 thing I would say no to and that pay rate for a LVN is fine but not for an RN. Money wise I wouldn't take that deal but I'm not in your position right now.

Feel free to PM if you want more details but I think you will be fine.

12 hr shifts so you can keep applying and looking. It's a paycheck for now. By the time you take your taxes out, your probably around the $15 mark. Kind of low for an RN, can you negotiate? Otherwise, keep your eyes out for better.

They pay flat rate. Same for LVN & RN, no negotiation. =(

@Tothepointe - I will PM you.
