Sterile to sterile is safe. You did not contaminate the sterile equipment because you had sterile gloves on. There is one inch margin that you are not supposed to touch because that is considered contaminated. Also no crossing over. The other rule is not to let the sterile field out of your sight----if you turn your head away from the sterile field--consider it contaminated.
I'm guessing the instructor didn't want you to check the kit before you performed the skill. Simple as that. It's not something you would do in "real life." In nursing school, you're at the mercy of your instructors. Whatever they say, goes, and usually for good reason. The one instructor I liked the least, is the voice I hear in my head the most at work. :)

HI guys I need help. I had a simulation lab at my nursing school in Ohio where I had to insert a foley catheter into a dummy. So there was a kit with all of the equipments required for the insertion, however I dumped my hands with sterile gloves into kit while being careful about breaking sterility to make sure everything was there and nothing missing. Is this breaking sterilty by anyway, to check the kit, it wasn't with my bare hands or anything. This is may be a stupid question to ask, but please guys I need help. I would appreciate all of the help provided!
