Hi! I figured this would be a good place to ask about FNP schools. I recently graduated with my RN-BSN at Ohio University with one year of RN experince in med/surge/ LTC, a 3.2 GPA and was accepted into Chamberlain and Spring Arbor University Online. I really like Ohio Univeristy's BSN program and prefer to continue with them, but there's no guarantee that I'll be accepted. Also, OU starts Spring 2019 and Chamberlain and Spring Arbor start June and July 2018. I'm looking for experiences with any of these schools, the value of education, pass rate, and likelihood of finding a good job with each. In a nutshell, what would you do? I don't want to waste money on education if the degree is not valued among employers and I will like to know more about each. Thanks!

Thanks. SAU is about 3 hours away but out of state for me so I'm not particularly familiar with Michigan's NP issues or the happenings of the area. I am happy to be accepted. I appreciate the info and any more info you have on SAU's program, or OU's. Thanks

Spring arbor has a good reputation, but it's fnp program I believe is brand new. In an online education, brand new is something I world be skeptical of. I world be very interested in how they're doing their exams. FNU required an I home camera and a lock out browser that prevented cheating. It was a hassle, but imo was an important feature that all online schools will eventually have to move to. I would ask what their plan for this because if they don't have one, implementing a new one in the middle of school could be a hassle.

Also something to consider, there have been at of recruiters looking for NPs in the Michigan area to teach there. So they may be jabbing some turnover.

apparently my autocorrect believes "would" should be "world". smh

actually my autocorrect has lots of fun words today. Need to pay better attention.

Mine does that too! I'm always editing.

Is there any more information on SAU? I appreciate info, especially from graduates of the FNP program. Thanks

Here to update- after doing research, I feel like OU is great while SAU is more flexible and that is appealing, with SAU offering one class at a time and one campus visit instead of 2 classes at once and 3 campus visits. OU I will have to apply to and SAU I've already been accepted. Both require students to find preceptors and are similar in cost. I feel like OU is more recognizable, especially in my area, but how much does that matter if I'm still receiving quality education and putting in the effort? I suppose I'm looking for validation in leaning towards SAU. Thank you for all of your responses!

Yikes, I'd run far and fast from any school wanting to charge me for school and then expect me to find my own preceptors. Finding quality preceptors, getting the paperwork figured out, having the school sign off on them etc all takes time. This is time you should be studying. Why would you want to pay someone for doing their work?

You will be doing a lot of running as most schools are pushing the preceptor finding to the students.

Yep I sure would. It's unacceptable. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Agree. It's completely unacceptable.

Just graduated, would not recommend the program. This is based on my personal experience only. This began at residency, one year into the program, when I was told I could not do clinical hours in my state, due to not having clinical instructors licensed by my home state. This has happened in four other states as well, that I am aware of.

There have been many, many issues in the previous 6-8 months for my cohort and the one before me. Due to clinical audits not being efficiently done during the program, several students were made to complete additional clinical hours at the end, and some had to find new preceptors or wait for openings with their previous preceptors. I was one of those students who was delayed. I took boards and was successful prior to completing clinical hours, only to think I was finished and had to complete more clinical hours after some of mine were zeroed out by the nursing office.

There is open hostility from the nursing office, and clinical instructors are not monitored closely enough in my opinion. Students are able to double up clinical hours, but many are refused as their preceptor paperwork was held up in the nursing office so long, the double request was denied due to not having an "approved" preceptor.

Many students lost preceptors due to the delay of the nursing office, or had to sit out and wait for an opening as the available date passed by without approved paperwork.

Emails to the nursing office often go without a return response, phone calls are not returned either.

As for the passing rate, that is due to each student cramming for the board exams, not due to the content taught in the program. We are expert level APA writers, but the content is not addressed as closely. Personally, I had several instructors who were not NP's or never worked as an NP due to their choice or circumstance.
