If you're not using the free study guides from excelsior I would suggest using that free resource and for $65 you can get the practice exam from EC that I HIGHLY recommend. It gives you a good indicator on what is going to be on the test and your strengths/weaknesses.
Don't give up, you may just need a more detailed / organized study plan and the content guide outlines everything you need to study for the exam.
Just my 2c.
I have clinical experience in RT but not nursing. I used only the workbooks from chancellors and took a test per month ending up with 3.5ish. I would definately purchase the practice tests. They provide reasoning for why answers are right but more importantly why the others were wrong.
I can tell you exactly how I studied if your interested. DONT give up! It is just a matter of finding which study method will work best for you. FYI, a few friends of mine have used my method and worked for them as well (sorry that sounded like an infomercial!)
Anyway, best of luck
Zack
This is what worked for me and a few friends.
!) Read and underline or highlight through the chancellors book
2) Go back and write out the sections that you highlighted or undelined
3) Take the test in the back of the chancellors book
4) Take noted on that test by starting at question one and turning the question and answer into a statement. (you should also do it for the other answers that were incorrect - you may have to look them up (use google).
ex. Who was the pioneer of modern nursing? A. Nightingale B. Watson C. Mahoney. -- You would write out in seperate statements
Nightingale was the pioneer of modern nursing
Watson set the model for Caring
Mahoney was the first african american nurse to graduate from US nursing school
Next take the first practice test provided by excelsior (you have to pay for these) and see how you do. Dont be discouraged witht the results (I usually made 60ish on the first and 80ish on the second). Now take notes down the same way you did for the chancellors test.
You now only need to study the notes form the book and the two tests.
About a week out from your acutal test do the second excelsior practice test. Try to treat it as the real thing. When you get your results take the same notes on it. Make sure you note your weaker areas and try to focus the rest of your study time on them.
Seems like a lot but I took a test a month (as did my friends) No one failed any exmas and most ended up 3.0 or better. We all work full time and then some plus have families so it is "doable"
FYI. If you learn instead of memorize (with the exception of NC 7) the real tests are easier than the practice ones.
BEST OF LUCK!

you've simply got to stick with it, however long it takes. the idea that you've got to finish by a particular time may not be entirely realistic. what does a few more months matter?
lots of good tips here. go all out.
motivation? i am an ec grad. my first year in nursing i've made over 100k. this is as a green nurse. i can't tell you how many times i heard "you got your rn on the internet". in fact, i was known as "the internet nurse" at the facility where i worked.
it is funny, but the same people who talked me and the ec program down now call me for starting iv's, etc. the phone rings nightly and they're begging me to come in and cover a shift.
so stick with it.
