Need your advise on first semester

Published

Hi everyone

I'm starting pre-nursing next semester at Valencia community college in Orlando. My goal is Valencia-UCF concurrent program.

For the first semester I'm taking:

college algebra

general biology

english composition1

student life skills

any advice on this schedule?

should I take general psychology instead of algebra?

Specializes in ICU Stepdown.

College algebra is so hard!!! But the rest of your courses aren't so bad so I suppose I would take it now as opposed to taking it with anatomy, physiology, micro etc.

If you're strong in math and science, taking them together won't be a problem, but if they're difficult for you, switching out bio for psych might give you some breathing room. You'll need the algebra for chemistry, so finish it now in order to have a good foundation. Work hard and manage your time well. Work out a study schedule that devotes around two to three hours outside of class for each credit hour you're taking. Spend more time on the classes that are harder or that you dislike - often goes hand in hand. :) Take advantage of the tutoring center. Make time to rest and relax. Good luck!

Thank you guys

I had no idea college algebra is hard!

my biggest concern was general bio as I've heard it's hard.

I was good at math and bio in high school but i finished high school 16 years ago.

I didn't find college algebra difficult, so it depends on how strong your math skills are. I think your schedule looks fine.

Good luck.

Does your program actually require college algebra or can you take intermediate algebra instead? Based on my ACT scores from 8 years ago my advisor tried to convince me to take a higher math when all I needed for my programs (ADN and future RN-BSN) were intermediate algebra and statistics. (I took the "easier" route, after much protest from said advisor).

I was good in math in high school and found intermediate algebra to be 80% review from high school. I would be hesitant to drop general biology because that would postpone you taking your anatomy and physiology classes or any other higher biology courses you may need. If you want to take general psych, especially if you need an abnormal or developmental psych class thereafter, I would drop the composition course and take it later.

Just my 2 cents. There are multiple ways to get the same destination. Good luck on your prereqs.

For ADN program at Valencia college I don't need math

I need mac 1105 (college algebra)

and statistics for UCF concurrent Rn-Bsn program

they told me based on my placement score I can take ACT placement test for possible higher math.

But I think if they just need one algebra why shouldn't I take the one which is easier for me

isn't composition prerequisite for general biology? I would be happy not to take it now because I've heard so bad about English comp!

I've never heard of an English prerequisite for general biology for any of the schools I've looked into. If it is a prerequisite, how are you scheduled to take them in the same semester?

Your school/state is obviously different from my limited experience. If I were you I would make another appointment with an advisor (a different one than you have previously used if possible). I would ask them very specific questions as I found that some advisors give out the same generic information if you don't go in with an agenda.

I already talked to two advisers and they gave me this schedule

Do you suggest talking to another one?

this is what comes in the catalog:

BSC 1010C

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of all mandated courses in reading, mathematics, English, and English for Academic Purposes. Introduction to fundamental biological principles emphasizing common attributes of all living organisms. Unifying concepts include chemical structure of living matter, structure and function of the cell, specialized cells, major metabolic functions, control systems, reproduction, genetics, evolution and ecology. Prerequisite for advanced biology courses. Students should be prepared to complete college level reading, writing, and mathematics assignments as part of this course. (Special Fee: $72.00)

These are most likely pre-requisites before you can start the nursing classes so I would get them done as early as possible. You most likely need Chemistry and Microbiology after this? And A&P

my advisor suggested me not to take A&P 1 and 2 and micro together
