need advice

i've accepted a position in a long term care facility in the usa (NJ) i've never worked in one before, i'm going through an agency the thing is i really wanted a med/surg position but the agency can't seem to find me a suitable position or state and i'm tired waiting however i'm going to put my best foot forward and i do enjoy the company of geriatric patients,any advice on my decisions??

will i be deskilled?? i've never worked with a ratio of 1 rn to 20 plus patients and i'm a bit of a perfectionist so i know i'll try my best can someone please share info on ltc facilities.

I personally would not touch the position. Are you going with a green card or temporary work permit? If you don't already have the work permit in hand for the H1B, forget about it. The quota is full for the year. I would look for another agency. Don't just try to grab something that you will be unhappy with. If you go the route of getting your green card, then you can choose where ever you would like to work.

bag it! On the other hand it could turn out to be a most gratifying experience for you! Remember you'll be in their shoes one of these years....Sure, it'll be hard work, just like all other nursing jobs...don't kid youself. It will present you with facts and I'm sure you'll be able to decide one way or the other if this is your time to stay or move on....in my 34 yrs, I've worked a number of positions and believe me when I grow up I'll know what I want to do???!! Don't accept anything that you are not comfortable with.

Are you supposed to be working under a temporary work permit

or with a green card? Many agencies promised nurses a speedy

permit to work in the US, but can't deliver on it. And also there are no

longer any temporary work permits available for nurses to work in the US.

All are being done via green card, which also makes it much better for you.

If you went over on an H1B visa, and then didn't like your facility, you were stuck, unless you could find another place to sponsor you within I believe it was 30-45 days. The only other option was to have to leave the US. Now you will be able to pick which state you would like to work in and which city.

And the type of nursing that you would like to do, not someplace that someone wants to put you.

i have not been on the board for some time and only now reading replies, i 'mgoing to the usa on green card basis and i've accepted the ltc position i've had to many offers with this agency and always in a state i don't want to go to, initially they said i can choose a state and then all these problems came up .to be honest i'm tired of the long process i just want to go and finish my contract, i'm also going to put my best foot forward and hopefully enjoy it ther's a inner voice that keeps telling me that the elderly needs nurses to so i'm not looking at it as a step backward but a learning experience and hoping for the best.

But look on the bright side of this, at least once your contract is completed you will be able to accept whatever type of position that you want AND wherever you want to go. You will have your green card, and that is yours to keep as long as you follow the requirements of the US government that go along with it.

:o Good luck. I'll never forget that poor nurse aide/nursing student from Asia. She was so happy that the hospital was sponsoring her. Unfortunately,after she had been at the hospital for only about 7 days something went wrong. I don't know what exactly happened. All I heard was that the hospital wasn't going to sponsor her after all and she returned to Asia. :crying2:
