Hi all,
I just started my first prereq (chemistry) this spring at a private college. I like this college because of its small size and personal attention from the faculty. However, now I am debating over that if I should stay at this college or transfer to a state U which has the 12-month accelerated nursing program (BSN). If I stay, it will take 3 - 4 years for me to get the BSN (it's a christian college and I do not have any science background, so I'll need to take all the relegion, art, bio, chem..etc classes). If I go to the state U, once I finish the prereqs (8 courses left), it'll only take me one more year to get my degree. What do you think? time v.s quality?????

This is just a gut reaction from someone who has always attended state schools, but nursing programs vary in quality from school to school, and sometimes private colleges fare worse than public ones in terms of NCLEX pass rates and other important stats. The best school in my area is actually the local CC's ADN program... they have had a 98+ passing rate on the NCLEX for several years.
If I were in your position, I would research the actual nursing program within those two schools and then decide which fits your needs better. But just don't assume that one is superior to the other without looking into them more closely.

Hi,
One issue not touched upon -- when all is said & done, it comes down to what is best for the patient.... I am going back to school for a 2nd degree...and as I screen the catalogue, I wonder 'If I do not take X course, how will this effect those that I am there [in hospital] to help?' I have a ton of behavorial sciences under my belt [anthropology/psychology/etc] so I do not feel a driving need to retake those; however, I may take some extra sciences [chemistry/microbiology, etc]. ...So, my suggestion is to give it some thought....

I attended both a private university and some state ones. I found that the state schools were actually "better" than the private. By better I mean the classes were much smaller so there was more 1:1 time w/ the prof, the classes were more enjoyable, and the $$ was much less. I'd say go for the state 2nd degree BSN. I couldn't justify another 3-4 yrs for another BS degree if you already have one. Just my opinion. Mel
Good thought, Mel!
I am not eager to spend extra time in school either. I do not think that I shall be admitted until Jan. '07 & am thinking of attempting to pick up a couple of courses as a non-matriculated student at a 2nd school in my area (if I can find one with like pre-recs). Much of this is speculative, I admit, but my old school appears to be interested in admitting me (one never knows until it is on paper, does one!)....
Thanx! Fleur2
