Need advice, meeting with TCN advisor to go from LPN to RN?Should I?

Published

Hi I am currently an LPN looking to pursue my dreams of getting my Rn degree and really do not have the time to go back to my local college and can't afford to quit my job. I need some advice about the TCN, PLEASE! Supposed to meet with an advisor tomorrow and don't know if should?! Any advice? Or what other college distance would work?

TCN is NOT necessary -- they are a publishing company (not a degree-granting institution) and an unnecessary middleman, and will add thousands to the bottom line if you let them. If you're looking at doing the LPN to RN, you can go directly with Excelsior College (EC), which is where TCN will steer you anyway for an LPN to RN. Exam content guides from EC are FREE, and will tell you which texts you need to study for your exam. Please browse the stickies at the top of the forum before signing with TCN!

Welcome to Allnurses, and our little distance learning corner of the world! :D

You would do well to explore the Excelsior College website, http://www.excelsior.edu. Everything you need to know about the program is there, from the horse's mouth. Excelsior College is the entity that you must enroll with and satisfy the requirements of to complete the program. EC grants the degree, not TCN. TCN will be glad to take your money if you so wish. If you are interested in utilizing TCN, the best thing you can do is to buy their study guides on ebay at $15-$30 apiece, instead of $500 or whatever their going rate is. Buy one of their study guides on ebay and see for yourself if the extra thousands of dollars to TCN is worth it. Be assured that the sales pitch will emphasize how very, very necessary TCN is to your success, when you now know that many have graduated from EC without having heard that same sales pitch.

And, I nearly forgot ...

Download the "School of Nursing Catalog," "School of Nursing Viewbook," and "How much will your Excelsior College Associate Degree in Nursing cost?" Lots of great information about the LPN to RN in those documents.

Hey, yeah don't go through TCN! I purchased modules from them already. Sure they do have some information, but you can buy CD's off ebay for 65.00 for every subject. plus there is others to help you throught here on allnurses.com

And, If you just want more material to read... I will print you mine, or even give you my books.:yeah: I paid.... sorry, still paying for my modules, and it's not neccessary at all... anyways, i am paying over 5,000 for them. and there are so many resources just for free. I would recommend just going through Excelsior, purchase the practice exams for $65.00 and I will send you the modules if you want additional resources. just.... i don't want you to waste your money like I did. :banghead: $500.00 per module is absolutely ridiculous.

Forget TCN. Also, should something happen where you can't finish the program youll still be stuck.

TCN is definitely not necessary...you have all the info right on EC website and of course you have us here too :)

I'm going through TCN, and i had no idea that i could go through EC alone, it's too late now. I'm pushing through and will finish. Either way make a decision and get your RN.

I have met a TCN advisor today. I'm very thankful for this thread. Is it true that excelsior is not recognized in California? If not, how do i go about this?

It is true -- no EC in California. Those who enrolled before 12/2003 were grandfathered in. Unless you're prepared to move out of California or work for the VA, Excelsior isn't going to be a viable option for you. Sorry!
