I am trying to decide which to do, first of all my goal is to become an RN. I am considering doing an LPN program first then doing the LPN-RN bridge because of competition and waiting lists at the college I want to attend and I need to get a job ASAP. BUT, I'm wondering if I should just go straight into college and get started on my RN (ADN) b/c I already have some of the pre-req's completed, english, history, math, you know, gen. studies. I'd like some of your opinions if you will, LPN b/c of waiting list and need for job or just straight to RN and get it done even though I'll be in school longer and probably not able to work FT while in school? Thanks for any advice.

I was in the same boat as you. What I suggest that you do is get into any program that you can because of the waiting list for the RN. I am currently in the LPN program and it's the best thing I could have done. I did all of my pre-requistes for the RN program and did't get in. But when you have your LPN license it makes everything a little easier.

I agree with Ama27
I didn't go to LPN school first, I was lucky to get right into an ADN Nursing program. However, I had some very good classmates, who didn't and lucky for them, instead of just sitting around for another year waiting to get excpeted into the ADN program, they started LPN school. My best advice, would be to apply to as many nursing programs (LPN & ADN) you can. Then just pick from the ones that accept you. I applied to 9 schools in total, and got 4 yes'. So I had some options. The worst thing is putting all your eggs into one basket. Good luck

I went for the LPN first because i could pay tuition out of pocket. And while i'm going back for my RN, i'm getting nursing experience, along with better pay, which is needed for school.

I reccomend getting the LVN, I had all the prerequisites done, but that doesn't mean you get in, it's like a lottery. I got my LVN, and am now getting ready to apply to RN schools. Yeah, there's still competition, but I don't think I have to give my right arm to get in.

I became an LPN first, then let my employer pay for my RN. This way, I didn't have to deal with the waiting list and having all of the pre-reqs done. I worked while I got my RN.
Since the state paid for mt LPN (through a displaced workers program, because my then employer was going out of business) and my current employer paid for my RN, I will have pretty much gotten it all for free by the time all is said and done.

I did LPN 3 years ago and am now in the RN bridge program.I finish up in 5 months. It was way easier getting my LPN first, because our bridge program is geared for the working LPN. Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have clinicals one weekend out of the month and it is a year long program. So, everyone in the class works.
